wait are these people comparing the HD600 to the HD580 or the HD580 percision II because the later production is thought to sound slighty worst.
EDIT: Also I think the HD600 and HD580 percision II share the same driver and the drivers to the orginal HD580 were slightly different

The only way to see if there is any difference, using our ears, is with a double-blind test. Not ABX. Not just listening to them.

On topic, yeah, if you change out the grills they are pretty much the same.

I disagree with your first statement-- ears are great benchmarks, it's mental perception that can't be relied on. Ears can hear PRAT, musicality, what we call speed, and of course soundstage, all of which are tricky to measure through mechanical means. Now, perception as a mental process, that's another matter...

As I continue to use the 580/600/650 I've noticed that the 580's with 600 grills to be similar to the 600 and in fact, if the same cable is used between both headphones they sound pretty close but I find the 580's a bit brighter and louder than the 600's. I am after 3 weeks begining to notice the 580's open up and sound even more like the 600's. They are not identical but with same cable they are close.I find all the of the Senn's in the 580/600/650 series to have their charms . Although trhe 580's may not be quite as good a headphone as the 600 or 650 I find myself more often than not listening to the 580's. I am basically enjoying the way they are begining to sound really good on their own right. The favorite of the three are the 600's with the Cardas cable as it is what I find the cleanest sound of the three headphones. The 650's are nice but are not as natural as the 600's. My 650's sound good with the Equinox cable and have a wider soundstage than the 600 or 580's but they are a less natural sound. It depends on my mood. The other day my brother asked me how many ears I had when he saw my headphone collection. I should have answered "I have as many ears as I have moods"
