Anyone know the differences between the new HD558's and HD598's?

I love my HD555's and im looking to get either or those.

Are both easy to drive? (dont require an amp)

^ No, iirc, they changed something directly in the back of the drivers of the HD558 (previously HD555). (I'm not referring to the piece of foam.)
Maybe to increase the difference between 558 and 598.

But we'd need pics of internals to be sure..

Is there a wiki somewhere about Senn's insane model numbering system?!

http://www.headfonia.com/sennheisers-new-hd558-and-hd598/  Take a look here, and there are a couple other reviews on that site for the 558/598 and even a teardown IIRC.

The general idea is, the higher the number, the better it sounds.

HD200-300 series - these don't really fit in the numbering scheme, some are great, some are really bad.
HD400 series - Sub $100 line.  The HD 448 is the flagship.  Designed for portables.
HD500 series - Mid-Fi line, the HD 555/558 is probably the only one worth considering here.
HD600 series - Audiophile line.
HD800 - The best Senn has to offer, and among the best headphones ever made.

They also have PXC, MX, PX, RS, CX, IE, OMX, and PMX (just quickly looked through their site).  Don't try to remember the numbering scheme for these, though if you do, I think you qualify for an award of some sort lol

I'm the first head-fier to get the new HD558, as far as I know. Modded, it's totally worth it to me. Great headphone, cured my upgraditis for a while, because I'm really enjoying it.

On headfonia they mention the only real difference in build is the different outer grill and somewhat better damping (?) on the HD598. The driver is the same and the sound is similar on both (modded 558 and stock HD598, I mean). Also, they're easy to drive.
