I donated blood about 8 times now. I never tought people would get paid for that. I mean, what does it costs you other than your 30 min?
Whenever I think about it and am able to fit it in my schedule, I go donate. We do have a more "socialist" approach here in Quebec, Canada. Health facilities are public and you don't have to pay or have insurances of your own to get treated so maybe that makes people more inclined to give away their blood to the ones in need.
For the blood compatibilities:
negative(RH-) gives to positive(RH+)
O gives to O, A, B and AB
A gives to A and AB
B gives to B and AB
Universal receiver would be AB+ and universal donor O-.
Here in Quebec, the most common blood type is O+.
EDIT : I forgot to mention: AB gives to... AB! That seemed too obvious.
