Have you ever sold blood plasma for headphones?

I donated blood about 8 times now. I never tought people would get paid for that. I mean, what does it costs you other than your 30 min?

Whenever I think about it and am able to fit it in my schedule, I go donate. We do have a more "socialist" approach here in Quebec, Canada. Health facilities are public and you don't have to pay or have insurances of your own to get treated so maybe that makes people more inclined to give away their blood to the ones in need.

For the blood compatibilities:
negative(RH-) gives to positive(RH+)
O gives to O, A, B and AB
A gives to A and AB
B gives to B and AB

Universal receiver would be AB+ and universal donor O-.

Here in Quebec, the most common blood type is O+.

EDIT : I forgot to mention: AB gives to... AB! That seemed too obvious.

I used to sell my plasma for booze money (lived on a college campus at the time). I also donate blood.

I can tell you that donating is extremely important. It was actually much faster for them to find a blood match ( I have some weird variation of B+) because my information was already in the LifeSource and American Red Cross databases.

Also, I found out that frequent donors get their blood for free! So that made my bill $300 lighter.

Do donate, whether you get paid for it or not - it is a good thing to do.

What!!!! you have to pay for blood if you need it?!?!?!?!? i knew in the states they pay your to give blood but charging to get it??? i just always thought it was because they had probs getting enough people to volunteer to give for free as happens here. never occurred to me they they charge you to get it

does remind me i got a card through the post the other day reminding me i can give again

Not yet, but thanks for the suggestion.
As an added kick, there are still other kinds of bodily fluids that are worth money!

Donating all that stuff could give a nice extra bit of income.

For me and my buddies, donating blood was like a random thing. If we had nothing to do, we just went to red cross and donated blood, for free.

Friend 1: Hey. What's new?
Friend 2: Nothing. You?
Friend 1: Nada.
Me : I'm bored.
Friend 1: ...
Friend 2: ...
Friend 1: Yo. Let's donate blood.
Me : Awesome.
Friend 2: Cool.

Nope. I'm flush (no pun intended.)

If you're not in the US (and even if you are, I guess), I'd be VERY CAREFUL about doing this. Do you really want to risk some bloodborne illness for pocket change?

What??

So you mean that apart from the US no other country in the world has the knowledge, medical facillities and people to collect blood plasma in controled medicaly safe conditions???

Didn't you know yet that the US is the only country that does anything right?

I started donating when I was in college. When I learned that something like 5% of potential donors ever bother to donate I decided it was my obligation. Every day people need blood/plasma. There are very few ways to have such an important impact on someone's life. I've donated whole blood a few dozen times and plasma a handful of times. I don't have any problem with someone getting paid, but for me it wouldn't be worth it. I like feeling like I am contributing. By the way--as a child I was always afraid of needles, but when a competent nurse is handling a blood donation there is essentially no pain (a little discomfort at most). I say go for it. Even if you want to be paid now, in the future you may decide to just donate and then you will be part of a small and important group.
