Have people forgotten what the '-fi' in Hi-fi means?

That's a different Fi (it's short for fidelis) and Semper Fidelis means Always Faithful. It's clearly got the same root word though.

At the same time the mangling of language bothers me at times. I just wonder if no one had actually thought about this before?

The OP seems concerned about fi-fi, the fidelity of the use of the suffix fi.

In the dumb thread names thread, someone mentioned another use of the word fi-fi.
