GS1000 vs. RS1 vs. RS2

Sep 26, 2007 at 8:13 PM Post #16 of 47
With either choice be it RS-1 , RS-2 , or GS1k you wont be let down. If I had to do it all over again I would have just pulled the trigger on the GS. My RS-2 barely gets any usage anymore.

Sure the synergy factor between GS and amp/source is more finnicky, but as a great starting point to build on you cant go wrong with the GS.

See if you can find an authorized dealer who may have a couple of pairs on hand so you can compare build quality, this goes for the RS series also.

When you listen to the GS1k full time it becomes more apparent that it excels over the RS series in many many ways.

Good luck in your quest

PS : I just noticed that kontai69 pointed out the importance of eyeing a few pairs for comparisson , just reinforcing that. Its an ideal circumstance for buying any Grado. Refer to his "Late Friday RS-1" post.

Put all of your thoughts on this thread and try to be a troll on all threads, and you'd authorize yourself to the FS forum by the end of the day.

I think the GS1000 is a significant level above the RS series, but only if you have matching equipment as they are extremely finicky cans (with an inverse response curve that has to be dealt with to boot). The RS1 is much much easier to find synergy with.

Grado's are famous for bad workmanship. That and their being as comfortable as a bag of nails, has stopped me getting some RS-1s.

Mindless is your avatar showing the effects of wearing Grado's?

Then what would you recommend?

Thank you. I've also been referred to Todd. I'll give a look at both of them.

If you go the RS route wash the pads in a little baby shampoo, thoroughly dry before before putting them back on. If you go the GS route dont worry about comfort, super comfortable.

Although a little wash of the bagels also helps ( re : GS1k )

I bought my new RS-1's about 2 months ago (just before the re-design) and they have impeccable workmanship.
Last of the button-style, I suppose. Beautiful wood. Satisfied!

They are also the most comfortable Grados I've ever owned -- lighter than the 325 and 325i sets I had, and easier on the ears than the SR60's pads (which cause me pressure-pain within minutes).

And, of course, they are also the best-sounding Grados I've ever owned.

I'd bloody hope £700 cans were comfy and well-made.

There have been plenty of bad RS-1 threads though.

I'd buy Grado's used w/pics.

Well, from out of Ebay.uk they will cost you GBP 450 new

And for GBP 730 you have an GS1000 new

But if you can get them from US, you can have them for 285 or something, used I mean. And GBP 350 new, which save you GBP100 anyway.

Cheers

I know. £700 is their price on Amazon, just making the point they're not cheap.

Besides I'd not buy RS-1s soley on a stock photo.

This has become quite the decision for me. I've read through many threads and have heard such a variance in opinion about the RS1 and GS1000. I thought I was set on buying the GS1000 but the vast price difference and differing opinions has me worried. And I still can't seem to find a Grado dealer in South Florida...

The biggest thing that's worrying me is constantly hearing about the GS1000 being "finicky" if the proper amp isn't used. I was planning on using the Grado RA 1...

And I still can't use the marketplace in the forum because of my post count so buying used doesn't work atm...lol
