Well, I read that as "it's SR225s with wood", but I guess it's not very conclusive. Where did you read they were different drivers? Did I miss a thread?

Aye, check the John Grado Interview thread with Zanth. It's a stickie

225 easily, HF-1s are better though if you can find one in FS (they are there)

225s are the best of the Grado line, better than RS-1s. I never heard the HF-1's though. But I wish the 225s were more detailed in the midrange, because my Shure E4s play some background lines that are inaudible on my Grados.

Grados are great if you like bright highs. Vocals sound like brass bells ringing, and the highs are grainy. They are very unique, and young people prefer them. As I am growing older it is becoming annoying at times. I wish I still had as much adrenaline rush like I used to. Then Grados will own.

I actually prefer the sound of the SR225 to the HF-1. While many say the SR225 is a poor man's RS-1, people say the HF-1 is a poor man's RS-2. So I guess preference may depend on sound signature.

Maybe he doesn't like the Rs-1's colouration and thus prefers the relatively linear presentation (of the current grado lineup) of the 225's?
