Hard for me to say...since I haven't listened to an SR225 in a long time, so I can't do a direct comparison.

All Grados are okay unamped...

Yep. HF-1s are basically semi-woodied SR225s, according to the description Todd posted.

HF-1s use different drivers than SR225s so it is a different phone all together. It's just been generalized that they sound better than the SR225s.

Correct, go for the 225. There may even be some good deals on it now in the FS forum.

This one's always going to be an easy question - go with the most expensive one, because money sounds better!

Seriously, the best thing is to try to audition all three. If you don't perceive many differences, or they're only slight, then save your money and go for a cheaper model.

lal: um. I thought Todd said they were SR225 drivers?

*checks*

"The HF-1 is based on the SR225. It has a wood driver housing instead of plastic and will have wood "buttons" saying HF-1."

Well, I read that as "it's SR225s with wood", but I guess it's not very conclusive. Where did you read they were different drivers? Did I miss a thread?

The trouble with auditioning is when you can tell there is a[n audible] difference between the different prices but then have to decide if the extra $70 or even $250 is worth the extra. Thats where I was when shopping for my 595's. "580, 590, 595, 600, or 650?" I asked myself. The 595's sounded clearest of the 580/590 and 595 set, and the 600's didn't represent an Earth shattering improvement for an extra 50Euros so... you know the rest.
