A friend is looking for a great closed headphone with good bass for around $400. He likes hip hop and rap, and wired headphones are just fine.

What do you suggest? Thanks!

I just got the AKG K371pro and it's efficient and the best bass I've heard on a mobile device, really fun. Does your friend have an amp? There's more demanding choices out there if I knew how much power he has available.
The 250ohm Beyerdynamic dt770 is fairly nuetral but good bass extension, though not the most detailed bass I've heard. The MMX30O Gen1 headset is also excellent, flatter than the Gen2 but you'd have to hit eBay to find one.

A used emu teak (or you can spend just a bit more for a new one) has fantastic bass for that price range. I would clarify with your friend if he wants the cleanest and best bass (teak!) or the MOST bass.

Sometimes people have the ‘beats’ mentality where more is considered better, even if it is bloated and bleeding into the mids.

Beyerdynamic DT-1770 (250 ohms). Used should bring it <= $400.

V-Moda M100, add in the XL pads for comfort. Takes EQ like a champ.

+1 for the Emu Teak. That thing is a monster in a classy wooden shell. A nice L-shaped response instead of a V, so you get mids and a semblance of balance alongside the thunder. Truly The Gentleman's Bass Cannon.

I agree 100% but don't count out the CFW1 and CFW2 respectively. All three are Kicking.
