What sounds absolutely best (sounds good or is cheap) on vinyl? I like just about anything. I was probably going to start with Radiohead, "Kind of Blue" or Bethoven, but I thought it might be a good chance to expand my musical horizons.

Any suggestions of what would be "best" on vinyl?

PS I would prefer something relatively easy to get.

I'm just getting into vinyl as well. I'm less concerned about the sound than I am about discovering new music that I wouldn't have otherwise come across. So, I'm buying small collections from Craigslist people and cleaning them with all with a KAB EV-1 record cleaner before playing. A great way to obtain a lot of music on the cheap

(which was the original reason for getting into vinyl anyway). Keep the ones I like and re-sell the rest.

any hard rock or metal from the 70s or 80s is best heard on vinyl

AC/DC, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Iron Maiden are all very easy to find cheap

standard tip of hitting up thrift stores and garage sales for dirt cheap vinyl... though you'll definitely want to be ready for some serious cleaning

Go to junk stores, thrift shops, secondhand stores, garage sales, estate sales, used record shops, and anywhere else that sells used vinyl.

Buy anything that catches your eye and isn't trashed.

The bes part of vinyl is music discovery, no question. Most vinyl is well-recorded, so check for scratches and damage, then buy. You're going to find all sorts of music you never knew existed and you never knew you'd love. Enjoy the journey!

I see you're from the lone star state, right? Pick up some of the great "Blues Men".......Like S.R.V. All of his Vinyl sounds great...... Chris Rea, Or you can't go wrong with what Uncle Erik said........try to stay away from the 80s stuff unless there's a band you like.....Go 70s if the Lps are in good shape...better recording jobs from the studios..... Neil Young, Allman brothers band...Happy spinning, enjoy, OH, you have to get Sgt. Peppers,IMO.

What's that one album you have on CD/MP3 that you've always wanted to hear on vinyl?

Start there.

If you want stuff to actively search out (and pay a pretty penny for), start with steve hoffman stuff. An interesting one is his vinyl mix of Icky Thump by the White Stripes. It's very different, and crazy better, than the CD/digital mix.

I'm not into formula 70's rock and glam pop but that's the sort of vinyl LPs I see floating around in the specialist record stores I know.

Most of what I love about vinyl is the alternative folk rock stuff - like Marissa Nadler; Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (earlier stuff); Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek, Sixteen Horsepower/Wovenhand.

Problem is, it never goes for very cheap. The prices do get stratospheric after a year out of print though

Hooray for classical vinyl LPs. Some of the CD transfers from earlier pre-80s vinyls are very thin and weedy.
