I wonder why it can take all these discretes but it can't handle an OPA1612.

doesnt the 1612 work? did you measure oscillations?

i think the discretes are kinda made to handle different board designs tho

Did some listening last night switching between the Burson V6V socketed OPAMP and stock and there is a sound difference between the two. Slightly better stage more open sounding and I like the extra weight of vocals as well.
The J2 performs at such a high level while I could hear a slight difference you are chasing butterflies here difference is not massive as I was expecting more a subtle refinement.

I was talking about the 4499EX I have both AKM versions.

Have had my eye on an ak4499ex version since seeing Passion for Sound's recent J2 roundup. I've got pretty limited experience with different dacs and I'm curious how much of a difference I would actually notice between a decked out J2 with the 4499EX and my JDS Element 3.

My honest opinion is not night and day. Doing some a/b 4499 and 4493 the 4499 is just a smoother slightly more expansive sound. The J2 4439 is exceptional piece of gear. But not sure not having heard you current JDS if it would be worth the upgrade.

I was part of the soft launch and just sent back my pre-production board. I love this DAC. Every familiar track feels like I have a secret version to listen to now. Currently I have the SparkoLabs SS2590 dual pro installed for SE and 2 SS3602' in balanced. I am powering it by a custom 12V LPS with an inline super-capacitor bank.

What really makes it shine though is the INTONA 7055-D. Galvanic isolation, re-gen & re-clocked into bit perfect goodness! The hype is real with this chip for sure!

Has anyone here heard (with your own ears) a direct comparison of the J2 4493 (which I have) and the 4499EX? If it's a big improvement, I may sell my 4493 and go for it.
