Well, flip.  My Atrios came in, and I'm a bit disappointed.  The bass is great, mids are great, but the highs... yuck... it sounds like there's a huge 1k-2k hump.  There's not much sparkle in these things at all.  Am I missing something here?  Granted, my only reference is my HD-650s (or some really old AKGs I have laying around... those don't really count :) ), but I'm not real happy at the moment.
 
Do you guys have any recommendations?

I'm only driving these with my laptop at the moment, so it could be part of the issue.  I'm going to transfer some music over to my phone and give it a shot just to compare.
 
Maybe Etys would be more my style.

Ok, maybe it was just my source material... now that I've had a bit more time with them and some different material, it sounds more sparkly and airy.  The midrange in these is fairly forward to me.  Not a terrible thing, just worth noting I suppose.  :)  
 
I'm going to let them play tonight to see if I can tell any difference tomorrow.  Part of the difference tonight may be my ears adjusting to these, too.  We'll see.  So far I'm feeling much better about purchasing them, though.

Yeah, I was pretty much going to suggest that maybe they just weren't your cup of tea...no shame in that. I thought the highs were solid, if unspectacular. I can't really say I consider them to be deficient at all. Have you tried some of the different tips that came with them? Most people will report very noticeable differences going from one pair to the next. I could never get a consistent fit with the flanges, so I've settled on some Comply tips. I just tend to get the best results with those, first with my etys and now with these. 
 
I wouldn't give up on them just yet...they aren't going to appeal to everyone, of course, but they are really darn good IEMs.

Yeah, I think these will serve my purpose very well.  :)  I mainly bought them to travel with... I hate taking my 650s with me on the road... makes me nervous on the plane that I'm going to break them... plus they don't isolate sound (IE, screaming kids) worth CRAP since they're open.  
 
These M5s do sound great overall, just not what I'm used to and not completely what I was expecting.  Except for the bass... wow... fantastic!  I love the extension as I listen do a bit of dubstep.  I'll probably try other IEMs later on when I get another raise or three (haha!), but for now these will do very nicely.  
 
Hmmm... Livewires/"whatever they're called now" is local and I think they do free impressions... hmmm... could be next.  Or softerwear for these... tough choice.

I'm with ya...there's a whole world of fantastic gear out there, so no sense in settling on something that doesn't completely do it for you. I can't wait to hear some of the more high end offerings, both IEM and full-sized headphones...fun hobby this is :)

Fun, but expensive.  ;)  I was able to use eBay bucks to buy these, though, so they were sort of free.  That always helps with the WAP.  :D
 
Up next for me is an amp... or two... O.o

I know a few of us have mentioned it in this thread, but the ZO2 is a very nice little portable for the Atrios...especially if you like bass :)

The reason the highs aren't "sparkly" is that if you have 'phones with ultra crisp and shimmery highs, it starts to really wear your ears down after an hour or so. By giving them a faint mute, you can listen to these things for hours on end with no issue.

I've not had that issue with my HD-650s before.  I definitely do not want forward treble.  But to have some air around the highs has never been fatiguing, to me anyway.
 
At any rate, these Atrios sound great to me now.  :)  I'm not sure if these broke in or if my ears adjusted.  Either way, they're exactly what I wanted.  Really great overall sound and a pretty good soundstage, too.  I'm going to plan on ordering the molds for them eventually.  I can definitely see where people are comparing these to much higher price tags.  These make me want mg6pros.  :)

Also worth noting, the medium silicone biflange fits PERFECTLY into my hear.  To the point that I'm debating on even getting molds for these.  I was really, really happy to discover this since so many people seem to struggle with fit and seal.

All I had to do was flip them upside down for an over the ear fit and they instantly turned into godly drivers. I bought a Fiio e11 off another HF'er and it'll be in the mail on Monday, I am SUPER stoked. 
 
I have no doubt there are "better" headphones, but I cannot possibly imagine what else I need in 'em.

Want an e6? Once my e11 lands I have no use for it and it DOES make a damn big difference. If the shipping is less than ten bucks I won't even charge.

You'll be getting some serious sub - bass when using E11 on EQ2 with Atrio, You'll be venturing into sub-bass galaxy territory my friend.

I've had this combination before.
