I am looking to buy a second-hand full-size headphone and was wondering what other headphones are out there with similar quality and pricing. Since I am buying second hand I thought to get the largest possible options to search and possibly purchase.
Thank you for your reply. These are a bit more expensive even as second hand. Should I assume at the price point of HD6xx (I can find some for 200-300 euros) there is nothing with similar quality?
They’re a nice complement to the 6XX because they’re sort of opposites. While the 6XX is intimate and warm and a little veiled, the K702 are incredibly wide and open and airy and quite detailed.
Also, they’re surprisingly affordable now. I believe the MSRP used to be over $400 USD, but now you can find them over at Thomann for $125 brand new.
I have the HD6XX as well as the DT880 Pro (600 ohm). The DT880 is, for me, a nice complement to the HD6XX because it has detail in the upper midrange and especially treble that the HD6XX doesn’t have. You just need to be sure you have a headphone amp with sufficient clean power into 600 ohms. AKG’s K712 Pro or the K702 would probably be good alternatives as well. Let your ears be your guide and good luck!
Nighthawk I am sorry to say is really, for me anyway, not a good choice. Extremely rolled off higher frequencies. At first I found it really interesting, certainly not fatiguing, but it doesn't take long before your brain is screaming out to have the missing high frequency information that it knows is there. I owned the Nighthawk and Nightowl, same story, easy to fall for initially, but just too darn restrained in the highs to stay with. IMO.
Each to their own as they say, I also know some people love those Audioquest headphones. Ultimately let your own ears be the judge. I agree about the DT800. I also owned the 600ohm Premium model. Really liked it, but it absolutely is not easy to drive so if you tend to like louder playback volumes, be prepared to get a decent amp.
Thank you for the recommendations. I read about nighthawks a bit more and will go over the other recommendations.
I mainly listen to operas, classics and vocals. I am aiming to use xduoo ta-10r. Would any of the headphones match well with this goal? Or maybe I should look for something else?
owning doth dt880 and hd6xx...i would also suggest dt880...i love them and they are MUCH more comfortable than the senn hd6xx....the mid /treble quite good on the dt880
AKG k702, the R70x, a used mrspeakers alpha dog (those can be very hard to find), beyerdynamic amiron or 177x go are all viable options. Of course, there is always the hd600 as well which I prefer over the 650, 6xx, and all of the ones I listed above. The sennheiser line scale very, very well with good amplification.
Assuming you have a solid state amp: The Senn 6* series and 8* series along with Beyers sound much more realistic on OTL tubes (and many agree with me). The XD00 T26 at $319 and two versions of the Bottlehead Crack sound way better than the $1500+ Ragnarok 1 and Bryston BHA-1 which are superb amps.
As for headphones: the HiFiMan Sundara current model is a well better headphone than the 650 for rock, blues, pop, any amplified live music. OTOH, the 650 holds court for classical (small scale), and super recordings such as Diana Krall. The pair would pretty much cover the field for you. Note that the Sundara can't be run from an OTL tube amp - that for Senns, Beyers, AKG (many), ZMF, etc (300-600 ohms).
