Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

Oh I am not denying they aren't great headphones. They are definitely amazing at $200, but at the end of the day, they are not what I would call fun headphones. The TH-X00 have not only the fun factor to them, but also wood cups as well and has some of the best bass south of the $500 marker. My point was just that the hype is bigger because they are much more fun to listen to and they are based on a pair of headphones significantly more pricey than the the K7xx are. Just my opinion of course! :D

Have you heard the k7xx? They are a pretty damn "fun" headphone themselves. The bass is deep, textured and much tighter than the thx00.

I guess I have to reverse that question back to you, "Have you heard the TH-X00?" The bass is textured and tight IMO, because it is not nearly as "boomy" as the TH-X00 and designed to be more accurate than entertaining, especially without the bass mod. The K7xx is what I would call an accurate and neutral headphones, hardly what one would call "fun". The TH-X00 on the other hand, has much more bass slam, which is what most would consider "fun" IMO. The K7xx are much more fun than the K701 ever was though, but it is definitely not a "fun" headphones to me.

Yes, I have both the k7xx and thx00. To my ears the k7xx is not really neutral in the bass. Regarding slam, the thx00 is closed so it will feel like more slam, but considering the k7xx is open it has very good slam to my ears. Anyway, they are both really good headphones, just surprised the k7xx doesn't get more love considering it is so cheap.

The bass stock on the thx00 is a bit muddy to my ears (mid bass anyway), but with alpha pads it is clean up nicely. The k7xx bass is really nice and tight, very enjoyable. I like and use both headphones, and I do find both of them very fun.

Of course, YMMV, IMO, etc.

It all comes down to preference honestly. I am a basshead personally speaking. I prefer the TH-X00 as I wanted something to rattle my brain. That said, I do still have a pair of K553's (gave my 7XX to my sister) for classical and jazz.

Gonna start a k7xx vs thx00 war?
They are completely different headphones. IMO its different enough to keep both. Unless you only want one headphone then i say k7xx is probably the more versatile pair and the thx00 is a specialist. Probably a very good specialist. I wont get my thx00 anytime soon so i cant really judge but based on other peoples impressions it seems that way. Ill be getting my k7xx tomorow.

I think you are the one implying that. I just see two fellows discussing two different headphones.

Agreed. My take is they're both great all-rounders, that offer great value and compliment each other quite well.

Relative to each other, if the K7XXs are like soaring in the air then the X00s are straight subterranean (amorphous sound signature comparison)

. To me, the K7XX are fun but the X00's are just even more fun.

Yes, well said.

I mentioned this in the Massdrop thread, but I think it's fairly straightforward as to the reason why the THX00 gets a lot more hype than the K7XX. There's just a ton more open back competition than there is very good closed backs. Heck, even within just AKG's own line you have: K701, K702, K712, K612, Q702, K702 65th anny that are all within shouting distance of the 7XX's price range.

This isn't to say that one is better than the other, but there's just a lot fewer options for something like the THX00 around $350-600 that there are things like the K7XX between $150-400. So the THX00 gets hyped because of lack of competition more than anything.

Further, there's always a premium for headphones to do bass very well and for closed headphones. So one that gets bass + closed right goes at a premium.
