Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

Last night I was listening to this and it's the first time my ears have been in pain from music:

I used my X2s but I'm wondering if people who have the X00s also find the bass fatiguing. Even at low volumes it bothers my ears quite a bit. I know the X00's bass has more impact but I'm hoping this is just a matter of the X2's bass not being as good as the former's. I might have to look for another headphone otherwise.

Can't say this was my cup of tea, tried it on the home stereo and couldn't take more than 2 minutes of it... thought I would try to assess on the X2 and X00 but didn't make it that far.  Far too repetitive for me....

Also think both of the full albums sound good on TH-X00 from -
 Black Sabbath - "13" album
 Metallica - s/t "black" album.

I do have some issues with bass fatigue while listening to house music for a long time. The steady thumping bass line starts to give me a headache after about an hour. However, I don't have issues listening to any other genre for extended periods with the X00's.

It's more likely a factor of quantity rather than quality that's causing the discomfort, but I doubt the bass response on the X2s is this good anyway.

EDIT: Listened to the song you have linked on YouTube, and I could manage listening to that all day on these, the bass isn't too deep. Now, things like "City in Florida" by deadmau5 can really pound me out. However, most people aren't complaining about bass fatigue, so I'd say that you're most likely bass-sensitive like some people are with treble.

I think some music just naturally fatigues you with bass...? Regardless of what headphone you use (opened ones might help nevertheless). For one:

This number can actually make K550 which is notorious for "evaporated bass" sounds overwhelming to me. K550 while struggles with bass quantity, does not have bad quality bass.

I don't find any problem with the linked instance song either though. I have quite a few tracks that get deeper and punchier and am enjoying them with TH-X00. I would also guess you are not really that much adequate to heavy bass.

The seal can definitely lead to bass fatigue along with the added treble imbalance with certain tracks. The human ear is very sensitive to 1.5kHz, 3.0kHz, and 7.0kHz making those peaks critical to identify in a headphone's frequency response. The Denon's have similar problems

I like my X2s bass very much. Never found them fatiguing. Way more enjoyable than HD600s or HE400s bass.
I am hoping to get more refined, more detailed bass from THX00, with slightly more extension in sub bass. Will see in May.
To me only treble can be fatiguing, never heard of bass fatigue.

The ear is actually very sensitive to bass and it can cause anything from dizziness to nausea. I think it may be due to the energy in bass moving the tinny hairs and even liquid inside the ear which directly affects balance.

@innaterebel & @NA Blur

That song actually didn't bother me at all. I think for whatever reason that song I linked might just have a kind of bass that my ears don't agree with. None of the other music I listen to has that much bass, so it probably won't be a big deal when I get me TH-X00s either. It's not like they're suddenly going to add a lot more bass if there wasn't an excessive amount to begin with. If it does end up being an issue I suppose I can always sell them for a good price and find something a bit closer to neutral.

im sure its something else in that song not the bass.

I should have specified in my previous post that the bass issue is more a generality for any sealed headphone and not specifically a problem for all TH-X00 users. More like a warning or fact.

Anyone try adding extra dampening material behind the cup to lessen sound leakage, increase isolation?  I'm thinking of doing that - I still have material from when I Anax modded my HD800 and Jerg modded my HE-400/400i.

I guess itll really mess up the sound sig though - TH-X00 seems to be pretty nitpicky with any changes

I say keep an eye in the classifieds if you don't want to wait until May.

I don't really know why someone would wait till May for another batch when they could just get it here.

I mean, sure it's fun to un-box something and all, but the ones being sold now are almost new anyways.

Just pretend its a new pair and ask the seller to wrap it up pretty.

TH-X00 have been pretty scarce lately on the classifieds - i think the people who didnt like the sig already sold theirs.

1, Not easy to find a decent used pair recently.
2, If there is one, that is usually around 20% more expensive than the new ones. (And they sell quickly.)
3, Not everyone is in a rush. I am very happy at the moment with my X2s and Mojo. But curious to try TH-X00s if I like them more. Not sure, but wanna try.
Nothing that can't wait a couple of months.
