Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

When driven well, the HE-6 sounds more natural and smoother than the TH900, but the TH900 has more bass and sounds more dynamic, so what you will like depends on your preferred music, source and amp quality.

I agree with this.  The dynamic part can be argued though.  The bass on the TH900s are really good.  You have to work hard to get the bass on the HE-6 to that level.  It can be done but the TH900 comes like that out the box for sure.

good to hear. I'm picking up an he-6 this week at a great price so I'll have some comparing to do between it, the hd800, and the th900. I don't have a proper amp to drive the he6 right now...I mah have to try some old monoblock tube amps and see how they fare.

I'm looking forward to testing the he1000 when it comes out. Wonder if I need an amp like a Volkswagen to power it though.

I just started reading through the he1000 threads (man, there are a ton of them) and haven't yet got a sense of how difficult they are to drive. but based on preliminary specs alone, it looks friendlier than the he-6...but I'll have to read more.

Someone mentioned razordog on here which I had forgot about.  Picked up a B-Stock TH-900 arriving tomorrow.  Excited since I already own the Bakoon HDA 5210 everyone says is so great with the fostex.

I think it was a review that mentioned this was an excellent pairing (headphonia?).  The bakoon deserves more credit than that.  I find it unlikely any headphone would sound bad powered by the bakoon and a complimentary source.  So anyway I'm looking forward to it.

I believe Tyll tested the HE1000 on a mobile device and said it sounded fine in comparison to be driven by the EF-1000.

i beleive the th900 sounds better with certain types of amps. For example I love the hugo but totally get the hpa8 as a great pairing. It just reaches down far and has clear smooth mids and highs. Is it possible the V shape th900 doesn't respond well, in that posters ears, as it should to burson conductor.?

Err I hope so, did I get that right that it's 50 watt per channel, isn't that well honking power output.

To what post are you referring to? To me TH900 sounds fantastic with the Conductor. I have so far not seen anyone in this thread say anything bad about Soloist + TH900 combo, (same amp in Conductor). HA-160 I've read various opinions.

To put it in perspective, Canadian411 is the only person I know who thinks the GS-X mk2 is ugly.  We joke about it often.  However, it comes down to his preference.

So I wouldn't think the unit is faulty - he just has a very difference of opinion on most things.

lol!

I've seen plenty of people who didn't like burson.  I believe there was a lot of criticism going around when the HA-160 was released.  They were very similar complaints about 'muddying' up the sound.

I can say that the TH900s sound wonderful with the Soloist, but I haven't heard them with the DAC on the Conductor. If anyone is interested in a mint pair of TH900s, please see my signature.

I believe what some may be confusing stems from the model designation.  The old model, non-Conductor/non-Soloist, and the new model Conductor/Soloist share the same designation, "HA-160D".  The older model is indeed slower, more muddy, than the faster and more detailed, Conductor/Soloist, version.
