Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

The Dark Cocobolo, I love those looks!
I'm a bit afraid of silver cables on a TH900 though, I'm thinking less bass?
I'll check out their site.

I love that dark colored cups, however it's so expensive that I almost want to buy a CNC machine.
Good/decent CNC cost about $2k, Lawton cups are about $500ish, if you make 4 pair cups you break even :)

Start to open a business :) just saying...

appleheadmay and justin_time are lawton converts but i'm not interested in buying what he's selling. isn't there a lawton mods thread around for his customers to post in or maybe one of you guys could start one for the th900?

Just put your fingers in your ears, close your eyes, and go "lah lah lah lah lah" real loud.

Re: the Lawton mods - http://headfonics.com/2014/09/the-lawton-fostex-th900-review/

In the sound section the reviewer uses terms like "a little", "a bit", "slightly", "some", & "subtle" in regard to audible changes after Lawton mods. The largest difference seems to come from controlling resonance & vibration - which isn't something that really bothers me (and I make these absolutely slam via the ifi micro).

I contacted Lawton directly about which portions of the frequency response his mods affected, but he wasn't ready to commit to any statements there. Originally, I was going to do the Lawton $40 DIY kit, but I don't know that it'd really give me anything substantial for the effort (and it's advertised as the mod that changes things most). For the price of a fully modded th900, you'd do better going with a more resolving DAC and/or more powerful amp instead. That said, everyone will spend their $$$ how they want to.

Twerk: you really have to play those th900's through a better amp/DAC! The ifi micro is an easy win @ $499

The cable mod I loved on the TH900 and my D7000 is the Q French Silk.  So soft, light and supple, it really makes the cable "disappear" in regards to ergonomics.  I know a lot don't mind the fire hose so that's ok, but for ease of movement nothing beats Q French silk.  For the record, I heard no difference in sound.

To the earlier discussion - glad I'm not a golden ear.  My fully modded D7000 was basically the equal of my fully modded TH900 so I ended up selling the TH900 to..............TWerk.  So glad he has come back to the Fostex chassis, as to my ears it is the BEST sound signature ever.

As an owner of the MD-7000, LA-2000 and mostly stock D-5000 with the exception of Lawton angle pads, these are the best for me, and based on a number of you guys buying MULTIPLE TH900's Fostex made a winner with this platform.

And to the other question about whether there is a thread for all things Lawton....................... http://www.head-fi.org/t/299627/how-to-build-one-of-the-worlds-finest-dynamic-headphones-markl-denon-ah-d5000-mods/795#post_11360558

it's kinda hard to avoid them. and a good amp shouldn't change the sound of a can - just sayin. lawton mods are a niche market in a niche market. they deserve their own exclusive thread or maybe you could pm each other?

Moody lately....

I'm actually in a coolness class of my own. Turns out my right ear cup can swivel full circle.

Bet your TH900 can't make a pose like this!

Does anyone know if there's a place to audition these in the LA area?  Fostex's dealer distribution list is a little hard to comb through with all the other gear they sell.

These are the next headphones on my radar...

I live in LA area and I just got my th900. I really love it. imo, I think in many way is much better than my LCD-2 Rev 2.( it's heavier and kind of dark). The th900 is just so light in weight and sound quality. It's very relaxing feeling and you lost in the music not the head gear. I just got my photo for Avatar but I have not been able to post it( waiting to get permission) I am using Yulong DA8 for DAC/Amp and LD lV SE tube Amps and mac mini.Quite happy with the result. joesmokey e-mail me if you live close by.
