Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones

Diminishing returns dude. No can is 4 or 5 times better than another. If you get the Denons you know you'll end up with the Fostex anyway :)

My situation is kind of similar. I have HD650s and want closed-back headphones with amazing, hard hitting, accurate bass but also with an audiophile reference sound quality. I don't like those boomy, low-quality bass that average Joe likes. In basshead club's page, TH-600 is said to be the 3rd best basshead headphones. TH-900 is 2nd. I also considered buying the D600 due to its affordable price but didn't because I thought maybe I should spend more and buy TH-600s instead. Then the law of diminishing returns come to mind, am I wasting money blah blah... Hard to decide.

You can find D600's used for $200 or less. Worth every penny IMO.

I've had the TH600 for two weeks and own the D600. The Th600 is maybe a bit better but not by much if at all. For the cost differential maybe try the D600 first. I think you'll love the bass and be happy overall.

Hey, how do you think TH600 is with EDM? :) And movies... The bass is good I assume? I want to buy a pair to complement my HD650s. HD650s are great at mid-bass but not so much at sub-bass.

The bass is epic.the th600s are made for EDM. The HD650 would be good for other genres. The mids on the sennheiser would be better. I've only got the hd600. The TH600s mids us a little thin and recessed. Even the mud bass is quite nice on the th600s

Thanks... I'll probably get TH600 but I'm not in a hurry, maybe wait for the price to decrease a bit...

d600 sounds wonderful if you dont make a direct compare with th600, but if you make a compare, you will see that the bassquality from d600 and th600 are not in the same league... but the d600 is at stock bassier than th600...

hm, then the th900 is also a bit better

It is. But not $1000 better. Had them, sold them as they were so close to my D7000's with Lawton mods that they were redundant.

After trying lots of headphones I realised i like a full midrange and a smooth top, I find the d600 mid recessed and slightly harsh up top compared to my speakers, which makes them sound slightly thin in comparison.
I was hoping the th600 would change this, they were clearer sounding with maybe slightly better defined/deeper bass but they were harsher/brighter and the dip in the mid bass made them even thinner sounding, overall for the money I keeped the d600 and moved the th600 on as it was a step in the wrong direction for me.
I even compared the th900 against the denons, the th900 are definitely better then the th600, there very dynamic and very clear but they still are to bright/ harsh in the top end which ultimately stopped me spending the money.
I also liked the hd650, because it has that full midrange and smooth unfatiguing top end,its definitely more my sound signature, The d600 did well against the compition there not perfect but they are a bargin, its the recessed mids that let them down for me.
I've ordered some jvc dx1000 which I'm going to try, failing that ill probably get a pair of hd650s to go with the d600 best of both worlds.

Hope that helps a little

I see you have the D7100's as well. I might be in a position to get those at half the price of the TH600's. Yet some are saying they are not that different from the D600's. What has been your experience with the 7100's.

Cheers.

Sure does and thank you. Will probably grab the HD650's. Should not really be looking at closed cans anyway. Already have 2. Gotta stop visiting Head-Fi. I can see where this is going, next I'll be after an amp for the 650's.

There's not much of a difference other than deeper bass. Check out this comparison graph of four Denons. I'm not a big graph user but this shows the slightly deeper bass.

My problem is I want to stay away from amps, hence going for denon/fostex type cans as they can be driven straight from an ipad/iPhone, they also are closed and very comfortable, that's basically my criteria.
Some has mentioned the jvc1000 is like if sennheiser and denon had a baby they would be it! Got my attention :D going to give them a go if not ill probably sell them and get a amp and some hd650s

If that's the case, then I reckon the Denons (D600, D7100) will be a better fit for you. The Fostexs can be driven straight from most sources, but they really need amplification to shine, imho. The new Denons on the other hand, were made with mobile users as a potential target market - not sure about the D600, but the D7100 even comes with a separate cord with iDevice compatible remote (maybe mic also, not sure) - so you'll probably get more joy running them straight from smartphone or tablet.

As for SQ, can't comment on the D600 since I never tried it.
