How many connector pins are active? 30 or 4.
My custom has 4 active (visible when i look at it) and the official apple ones have 30 active......i think.

The volume pot on my Fostex hp_p1 seems to have gone funny.
 
I gets static or louder in one ear when tapped to the side.
 
I think I need to send it in for servicing, anyone else had a similar problem?

So far no. It gets used a lot too.

Any unusual conditions the HP-P1 been used in lately?

No, nothing unusual. I look after it very well and even bought a nice leather case for it earlier on.
I have had the right side slightly louder for some time, very hard to notice, i thought it must be my hearing until it all went awry. And now it goes from balanced to very imbalanced with a bit of static.
 
i suspect it may have been messed up from the beginning, but am not 100% sure.
 
Anyway i emailed Fostex today and they said to send it with a copy of my receipt of purchase (which I have) and they will have a look at it.
A nice quick reply.
 
I will send it off tomorrow.

No doubt Fostex can help you. Hopefully you will get your HP-P1 back fully functional and not a new unit. 
 
If only you had the HiFiM8 to stand in while the HP-P1 absent.

New unit would also be cool, have to burn it in all over again though.
