Many thanks for complete information about power and versions!
I think japan version is best for me.  Aftemarket can be found about 700$ with shipping.

PS inventor of torx with pin  - burn in hell...

No problems.

I've been using mine with a pair of HD600s and it sounds fantastic. The only area I could fault the unit is having a tiny input selector knob and it's also too close to the volume knob. They should have put a bigger input selector knob on the left and moved the power button in to the middle O.o.o.o.o.O.

Is the Fostex HP-A8 worth getting for it's DAC alone or would it be better to just get a standalone DAC for the money? I would be pairing it the DAC in the HP-A8 with the Woo Audio WA7 amplifier.

Its mostly depends on the set up. Using external amp might benefit for some set up and but might not with some set up.

The HP-A8 has a Japan only warranty and is set to 100v by default, the Japan version is much cheaper than the international one. The HP-A8C is the international version with international warranty and the voltage is set to the region your buying for.

I brought my HP-A8 for about 81,000 Yen ($785 USD) when i was in Japan. A quick look online the HP-A8C is about $1500 USD

Internally there are only 3 voltage headers, 230V, 120V and 100V. I'm pretty sure you will be OK setting the HP-A8(C) to 230V and using 220V.

After I brought my HP-A8 in Japan the hardest part of this procedure was finding the security torx screwdriver to open the case. once the case is open pull the cable that's plugged in to the 100V header and move it to the 230V one keeping the same cable orientation. i changed the power cord to a earthed version and it's been working fine for the last 3 months.

A bit confused here. On the pic I see no cable plugged into any of the three voltage headers.
Or have you simply pulled it out of the way to take the picture?
