For those of us with multiple headphones, which ones are you listening with now?

Hi All, for those who have/heard the ps500x. How good it is? I used to have the original ps500. I am sure I would h*te the braided cable but its the sound that matters. I may have a chance to buy one (amp would be iBasso PB5 and using that one with my GH1 really exceeds my expectations, never heard them sing like this before with a portable amp).

There's a dedicated Grado thread that is far more likely to get you an answer to your question:

Qobuz > ROON > Holo Audio Cyan 2 > Violectric V222 > Sennheiser HD650

arcadia.JPG

Arcadia (2025) by Alison Krauss and Union Station - Not my usual type of music but my tastes are actually pretty wide and seeing this one pop up fourteen years after their last album I just had to have a listen. Alison Krauss has such a silky smooth and airy voice, crystal clear too and she sounds just as good as she did on Paper Airplane but I'm also a fan of Dan Tyminski, so was saddened to hear he's quit the band to concentrate on his solo career and you can't really blame him after such a long break. The good news is that Russell Moore, his replacement sounds remarkably like him. How does it sound? Well it would be easy to imagine that Paper Airplane was released last month not all those years ago because this sounds like it follows right on and is likely to be a massive hit like it's predecessor.
Alison Krauss and Sennheiser HD650's are just made for each other, the sound is just sublime :darthsmile:

I didn't know she had a new album coming out. I'm not a huge fan of the genre either, but she has the kind of voice that I could listen to while she sings from a phone book so I'll definitely be checking it out. Especially when it comes to female vocals, if I enjoy the singing enough the performance can often transcend and overcome any potential issues I have with not particularly enjoying the genre. AK is one of those performers for me. Thanks for the heads-up! 👍😎

Topical Nonsense:

Today's our last full day in Hawaii so I'm up early while everyone else is sleeping checking out another surf spot that some locals I met while surfing the other day rec'd to me. The sun is coming up so I'm prepping my board and listening to some tunes while I wait for it to get overhead and for the mid-morning swell to pick up. Right now, I'm listening with the CFA Black Stars and I've got them running off the iBasso DX160 (w/ Fidelizer custom ROM). Something about the DX160 suits the Black Stars very nicely.

Up first in my queue is Marc Pattison with his 2014 solo album, Bionic. Pattison is a guitarist/multi-instrumentalist from San Francisco who self-releases instrumental prog-metal albums. I have no recollection of how I initially discovered this guy's music and I nearly skipped over trying it out because the terribly done cover art had me thinking I must have added it by mistake, but I ended up deciding to give it a quick listen. Well, I actually enjoy it quite a bit. It's just straightforward, guitar-centric prog-metal, but it's got some good musicianship, a feel for a nice groove, and a kind of sinuous, bluesy, emotional quality to the guitar playing that makes for some good listening. It's nothing ground breaking or genre redefining, but it's solid, fun, and delivers a suprisingly entertaining listening experience, for menat least. The album cover designs are also reminiscent of CD label designs I'd make for CDs I was burning in high school in the early 00s so you get some comic relief to go with the musical entertainment. Who doesn't love a two for one deal? 👍👍😎

Qobuz (Google Cast) > WiiM Pro Plus > Burson C3R > SMSL SP200 > Quad ERA-1
To me, the SP200 with the right kind of headphone (not too sensitive or demanding - effectively this amp unfortunately has limited usable volume range due to imbalance at low volumes and lack of current at the highest) and a chain that doesn't need an amp adding coloration still has a special kind of magic. It objectively doesn't measure quite as well as something like the A90D but it nevertheless sounds to my ears even more transparent and resolving. In the case of the pairing with the ERA-1 this sometimes results in feeling like the sound is directly beamed into my ears, even more more so since the addition of the WiiM and substraction of my PC improved clarity of the rest of the chain quite a bit. Actually quite a lot, i didn't expect a budget streamer to make such a difference.

Thanks for posting this, I like pretty much everything Djabe release and had no idea they had put this out - they actually have two out, there's a live version of The Magic Stag too.
Question - why are you using HQPlayer and an mScaler, don't they do the same thing?

Tidal (PC) --> Topping D90iii --> Auris HA-2 SE+ (Brimar 6060 driver tube)--> Meze 105.

The Brimar tube arrived yesterday and let it burn in for roughly 5 hours. My 105s are singing. So much more soundstage, detail, crispness and airiness. I think I will place an order for several more of the same tube before they sell out. I am pretty dumbfounded as to what a robust difference the Brimar makes. Happy listening everyone.

World War Trio Parts II + III (2015) by Consider the Source - These are an American instrumental trio that have studied music in India and describe their music as "combines influences from Turkish, Bulgarian, North and South Indian styles with jazz and fusion, and then we filter it through our own heavy, rock and psychedelic sounds and approaches". With such varied influences their music is certainly different, never gets boring or predictable and sounds pretty damned good. Guitarist Gabriel Marin plays a custom Vigier double neck guitar / guitar synth with one of the necks fretless and this allows for a near infinite variety of sounds and he certainly mixes it up on this two hour plus double album. World War Trio (the first part) was released a year earlier and is just a single track. :darthsmile:
