Funny. When I a/b-ed the Audiolab 6000CDT and the Cambridge Audio CXC v.2, one point of preference (for me) was the CXC's tray loader (allowing useage of a good CD mat).

Maybe if you don't have a tray you don't need a mat, so it doesn't feel like a benefit to me but rather proof something is wrong.

Yeah, the few CD drive failures I have seen were all jammed trays that failed to open or close, and they rattle and have some kind of play in almost all cases. TASCAM makes a point to say that the CD drives in their higher end CD recorder decks are designed for audio use, not just hijacked PC drives. Hard to say what companies are doing with tray drives or if they pay attention to that in most cases, since nobody expects anything else.

And if you look at good hifi rigs in cars, slot loaders are (were) the top choice. Seems to me that they're designed for high vibration environments, grip the disc firmly, and don't jam.
