For me it was Weather Report in 1974 at the Music Hall in Boston. Guy who got us the tickets thought we'd be happy sitting about 20 feet from the left bank of speakers. Shorter and Zawinul spent the night trying to out solo each other. I've heard K-horns measured at 118 db, and this was worse.Semi-related note here: Johnny Winter is the only musician that I walked out on due to the volume. I stayed for about 5-6 songs and couldn't take it any more. Jorma K was the opener, and I thought he was too loud, but JW made my ears bleed.
I sure get that!!!! Ironic thing is that now, at age 63, I actually submit myself to louder music than I ever did. I work at a local club called Daryl's House (Daryl Hall's pet project) as a house photographer. The club is quite small, with the main room measuring about 75 x 150. Needless to say, wherever I place myself to shoot, I'm no more than 20-30 feet from the speakers. Depending on the act, It can get very loud. I do wear earplugs when necessary. Edgar Winter played there a couple of years ago, and I was shooting from the edge of the stage. I think he was competing with his late brother for the king of volume!!!!For me it was Weather Report in 1974 at the Music Hall in Boston. It was so bad my ears felt like they were bleeding for a week. And the hearing loss I have on one side dates to that night. I couldn't leave because I was 17 with older guys and didn't want to look like a weenie. I wish now I had taken the weenie course of action.
Love Daryl's House! really enjoyed the different music genres and backgrounds represented on that show. Very cool to see them do each other's songs!I sure get that!!!! The only lasting damage I've done to myself is that I cannot listen to someone talk without looking directly at them, especially if there any level of ambient noise.
The club is fantastic. They get a lot of smaller national acts there, and occasional surprise (Martin Barre has played there several times). And it’s less than 15 minutes from my house!Love Daryl's House! really enjoyed the different music genres and backgrounds represented on that show. Very cool to see them do each other's songs!
