I only have about 90 minutes on them so far. Later today I will dive in for hours.

Somehow I didn't realize they were new. No rush on the impressions. Take your time and enjoy those bad boys. Congrats on the new shinies! 🎧😎

[Reminiscent of our seven (7) years in NM: the first two (2) on the Continental Divide; the last five (5) in Albuquerque.]

I've got family that own a spread near the Continental Divide Trail that the Park Service runs. Goodness gracious is that some wild land! I helped them build fences on it when I was in high school and it's the only place I've been where you can literally run into shale and bedrock just a couple feet down. It's got canyons/arroyos all over the place, lots of game, tons of snakes and snake dens if you know where to look (I'm a big snake fan so that's a bonus for me), etc. They run a hunting lodge and guide service off of it now. It's a beautiful place to live! 😎

Topical Shenanigans:

This morning I've been switching back and forth between working on some tracks and listening to music so for now that means I'm running my AKG K872s off of the ifi Diablo 2 which is being fed by my laptop. It has been a good while since I've used the K872s for anything other than monitoring and trackwork so it has been cool getting reacquainted with them in a musical enjoyment setting. They're a great pair of headphones that are pretty much unheard of in the hobby. My guess is that's at least partially because they are very unforgiving of production mistakes and quite picky when it comes to signal chains. Also, I think these days they're not a great deal at their asking price new, though they can be had at steep discounts on the used market that make the price to performance ratio shoot up. Either way, I genuinely enjoy mine and they are my studio workhorse so I've more than gotten my moneys worth out of them.

Currently sitting atop my queue is The Elephant in the Room with his 2021 self-titled debut LP. TEITR is a solo project from a guitarist/producer in Minneapolis and he puts together some absolutely sick instrumental prog-metal material. Various guest musicians and friends fill in on other instruments on an as-needed basis, but are a rotating cast and aren't considered to be members of the band/project. Earlier this year, I came across and reocmmended his most recent album, Sundog (rel. 2024), and I figured now was as good a time as any to rec the first as in many ways it's just as good if not better. The standout track is One Man's Treasure which features the dude from Thrailkill, another killer project. That said, there's not a bad track in the set. This album isn't as polished or as well written/arranged as the second, but it has an undeniably cool spirit and drive to it. If you're into prog/prog-metal at all, you shouldn't pass on this one. 🔥🤘😎

Hiromi Spectrum (Telarc, 2019, Jazz)....

Hiromi-Spectrum.jpg

This CD release is basically a recital. And my favorite piece on this by far is a nearly 23-minute piece in varying piano pieces all mixed to create this wonderful, layered sonata called Rhapsody in Various Shades of Blue. This is such an incredible listen when heard through the HEKSE. As I’ve said in the past, their sharp edges really bring out the best for piano pieces (and guitar). One of the rare jazz pieces where I overwhelmingly prefer the HEKSE over the Senns HD800 S.

Thanks, I'll have to find that. I've been with her since her first release in 2003 with Another Mind. Have most of her stuff, but not all....

Hiromi-Collection.jpg

Also have Jazz In the Garden (The Stanley Clarke Trio - featuring her, Stanley, and Lenny White).

Thanks but I prefer to buy CDs where possible as I'm a CD collector with over 3000 titles. What you saw in JRiver is my my ripped files. My entire collection is ripped for local file playback (when I don't feel like hunting thought CDs), and streaming from my NAS when out and about. I also have Spotify so I'm able to preview stuff I might be interested in buying.... say Duet :relaxed:

Currently running the ZMF Eikonics driven by my modded Schiit Lyr (w/ Siemens Gold Pin ECC88s) and a Modi Multibit 2 fed by a Wiim Mini. This is another pair I haven't used for a while and they're sounding wonderful tonight. Punchy, rumbly, and musical. They're just a lot of fun to listen with.

On deck in my musical rotation is Richard Hallebeek with his 2018 album, One Voice. Hallebeek is a Dutch fusion guitarist whose work was recently recommended to me. This is his second album that I'm checking out and, much like the first, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. He clearly goes out of his way to incorporate some of the more complex rhythms associated with improvised or free jazz and he also blends in significant prog elements as well. Some of the tracks might even be more accurately described as jazz rock, but we're splitting hairs at that point. I need to look up who he's got drumming on this album because it's really nicely done. I'm only halfway through so I'm going to back to enjoying the music, but I figured I'd post this first so anyone looking for something to check out who enjoys a little fusion could give this one a spin. 👌😎

I switched to IEMs since it's like 3AM and I need to chill and start thinking about catching some sleep. I've got the SoftEars Twilights running off my Cayin N8ii for the occasion. When it comes to instrumental works that focus on a single instrument or small ensembles where tone and timbre rule the day, the Twilights are incredible and that's what I've got coming up.

Up next in the wee hours queue is Zokasso with his new album released earlier this month, Dawn. Zokasso is a guitarist/composer based in London and I had never heard of him or heard his work until this album came up as a rec from Bandcamp. It's a low key, kind of brooding or pensive instrumental prog effort that I'm finding quite enjoyable as I'm making my way through it for the first time. There's definitely some classical guitar influence apparent in much of his playing, but it's heavily blended with a proggy style. As you'd expect from a "guitarist/composer" the guitar takes center stage, but this is definitely not a guitar virtuoso style prog/prog-metal album. So far it has been an interesting listen indeed and I'd definitely recommend checkin' it out when you're looking for something on the mellower side of things. Two thumbs up from yours truly. 👍👍😎
