A New Day Dawning (2004) by Siena Root - Some revivalist 70's rock from Sweden is finishing this session. They've done a good job of sounding like Uriah Heep and Groundhogs and it's hard not to treat it as a copy rather than a homage but that's what I'm doing and I'm enjoying the hell out of it and seeing as the 70's was the decade I fell in love with music why wouldn't I? The music might be a flashback to the 70's but the musicianship is bang up to date, the organ playing would do Ken Hensley proud and the guitar has a 70's sound but with 21st century accuracy.
I went old school for this album, the wonderful little Vali 3 and my 325x Grados and the combined result is way better than the cost of those two should be able to achieve in a month of sundays.

Great pick! I love Siena Root. Wanna hear something truly sacrilegious, though? I find myself liking them more than Uriah Heep. Do me a favor and don't tell anyone, okay? No one will be able to take me seriously as a musician if this gets out. 😬

Topical Shenanigans:

I'm on the modded Hifiman Audivinas this morning and I'm driving them with my modded Schiit Lyr (w/ 60s Mullard O-Getter/Grey Shield ECC88s) with a Modi Multibit 2 fed by a Wiim Mini. I'm going to assemble a guide to the mods I've gone on these because I'm actually really proud of how they've turned out. Once I'm home and have my workshop rebuilt, I have a couple different waveguides I want to fabricate and try, but as they sit right now my Audivinas have a low end that reaches deep and has some real punch and impact. The mids are sweet, clear, and even, slightly favoring the lower mids, but presenting the whole range in a full, slightly musical manner that does surprisingly well with vocals of all stripes. The mids were a mess originally and required quite a bit of trial and error tweaking (no measurement rig on the road) to get them where I was happy with them. The treble was actually greatly improved after some basic damping was applied and after my last round of mods it's airy and well extended up top giving cymbals a nice lively wash without making them too splashy or ringy.

Overall, they've become a great pair of headphones. You can get them for $699 from Hifiman right now (less with any coupons applied) and if you add a little bit of elbow grease and a few bucks in materials you end up with a pair of closed backs that compete with any of the closed backs I've come across in their originally intended price range which makes them an incredible deal, IMO. I'm actually going to order a second pair because I have an alternate path that I was tempted to take with my modding process and after hearing/seeing how successful the mods on my current pair have been, I really want to give the modding path I didn't follow a shot. Sorry for the essay, I'm just excited, and more than a little bit proud, about how these turned out.

Now we come to music. This morning I've got two releases from a band named Sputnik cued/queued up: Parallax Vol. I (rel. 2016) and Vol. II (rel. 2024). Hailing from all the way up in Winnipeg, these guys are a proggy jazz fusion outfit whose sound also incorporates influences from blues, funk, lounge, R&B, etc. I don't remember exactly how I came across Vol I, but it must've been on a random Bandcamp deep dive a couple years ago. I immediately liked what I heard and was a bit disappointed to see that it was their only album and that further volumes had never materialized. Then, out of nowhere, they released Vol II in December eight years after Vol I and after I had spent the last couple years lamenting the fact that it didn't exist and that the band appeared to be done. The fact that it's an even better album than Vol I makes it all that much more miraculous. If you're a fan of prog, fusion, music with a bit of funk in the bassline, etc these albums should absolutely find their way into your queue. 🔥😎

Wow, I have to get out more. Some great prog/fusion from hometown Winnterpeg. Now if only we can beat those hard hitting St Louis Blues tonight. Thanks for the rec.

Great album. Laura tells an interesting story with each song, and her music and vocals are captivating.
Listening on the Schiit Lyr amp with the stock tube. It’s new so just breaking it in, very nice 👍.

Don McLean American Pie (1971). The song American Pie is an ode to the day Buddy Holly (a pioneer in rock & roll) died in a plane crash.

Don McLean - American Pie.jpg

Bye-Bye Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whisky and rye
singing this will be the day that I die

As a kid, I heard this song a lot on the radio and always liked it. Still do as it also brings back a flood of memories in those early 70's days,

I've posted these guys before, but they are just so good I had to post them again. Every album is a banger. If you love trip-hop, go through their entire catalog.

If you have more trip-hop recommendations - please share!

I'm constantly amazed by the number of quality bands I have found from the various areas I have lived in that I somehow had no idea about despite being much more involved in the music scenes in those places than your average person. You're welcome for the rec and I'm glad you enjoyed the tunes. :beerchug:

Topical Stuff:

Desiring a change of pace, I went ahead and switched over to some IEMs, namely my Dunu Glaciers, and my Hiby RS6. It seems like it has been a minute since I listened with the Glaciers, my time and attention having fallen largely on the Noble Onyx and Fir Xenon 6, and I've got to say they acquit themselves very well even when compared to illustrious (and more costly) models like the aforementioned picks. The Glaciers are the kind of IEM I could have as a one-and-only and be perfectly content.

On the musicial enjoyment side of things, I've got a newer discovery in my queue: Via Colorida (rel. 2023) by Tempus. So Tempus are a Latvian progressive metal/post-metal band whose music is primarily instrumental (there's one track with lyrical content on this album). They're a two-piece featuring only guitar and drums as their core lineup, with occasional guest musicians putting in appearances on vocals, saxophones, etc. As a result of their bare bones setup, they rely on heavy riffs and thunderous drums to fill out their sound, but it also gives them the ability to suddenly contrast that with much more sparse and even delicate sounding bridges and breakdowns. They really do a great job using their minimalist makeup to their advantage, playing to their strengths, using them in ways larger bands can't, and disolaying some creativity to keep the music from sounding as though it's lacking elements until that sound is desired or useful. It has actually been quite interesting to listen to and with how much I'm enjoying this album, I'll definitely be exploring their remaining catalog. 🤘😎

We're stopped for a bit so I've got a little time to break out some open backs. I figure, why not make it a Dunu double header and give the Arashis some ear time. With all the comparisons I've been doing with the HE1000 and HE6se series headphones, I've been neglecting these and that's unacceptable because they're a damn good pair of headphones and I really enjoy them. They'll be running off my Schiit Magnius and Soekris 2541 fed by a Wiim Pro.

On deck in tonight's queue are Stereochrome with his 2021 offering, Monsoon. Stereochrome are a one man psychedelic/stoner prog project based in New Hampshire. I only stumbled upon his work recently so I have no further background info on who the dude is or what instrument(s) he specializes in. I can say unequivocally that dude is very talented and that I very much dig his work. He's got four releases out under this project title and they're all well worth checking out. Monsoon is the most laid back and exploratory of the four and each has it's own individual vibe and balance within his unique stylistic mix. If you like stoner, psychedelic, prog, or are just looking for something a bit different than the usual, this artist and this album just may be your ticket to some musical bliss. 🤘😎
