I've moved on to the FiR Audio Xenon 6 CIEMs for the time being and I'm once again thoroughly enjoying them. They do a great job being energetic and dynamic without getting too bombastic or losing good balance. I had grabbed these for musical enjoyment, but also with the idea of checking them out as a possible stage monitor as I know a couple guys that are using them. I don't think they'd suit my preferences well for use on stage.

On deck in my queue tonight are Trilobeat with their 2022 release, Extinction Horizon. These guys are a Slovakian band whose sound is an interesting blend of prog, fusion/jazz, and post-rock with an art rock band's proclivity for artistic presentation and concept albums and some electronic stylings thrown in for good measure. This album is instrumental so it might not be immediately apparent without explanation, but it is meant to be a multipart composition on themes involving dying and extinct civilizations. Thematic ambitions aside, the music is beautifully written and performed using all the standard rock band instruments and several symphonic and electronic inclusions to give the tracks a truly varied sonic palette. I only recently discovered this band, but I really dig this album so I'll definitely be exploring their previous one as well. If you're into prog, art rock, post-rock, and (to a certain extent) fusion or nu-jazz this album is ripe for exploration. 🤘😎

Sheryl Crow Tuesday Night Music Club (1993) debut album. Folk, soft rock. I've near all her albums, and love everything she puts out, but Tuesday Night Music Club, will always be my favorite with such songs as No One Said It Would Be Easy, We Do What We Can, I Shall Believe, amongst others. I bought this when I was on a deployment exercise in Canada having met one of the locals who played it all the time. I fell in love with it then and still haven't stopped playing it, and how I got into her.

PC-> Tidal -> Wandla GSE -> V281 -> Tungsten DS (hybrid pads, deep tune rings)

pad rolling on the Tungs today. I love this system, it's so easy to swap. 3 different pads and the deep tune rings makes for a lot of combinations you can swap on the fly.

I've had an interesting start to the day. At 5:30 this morning we had a drunk driver side swipe our bus and then drive off the highway and into a fence anout 20 yards off the shoulder of the road. My bassist and I ran over to help the lady. Her forehead was split and her nose was bleeding, but other than that she seemed to be okay. Well, outside of being like blackout level drunk that is. I'm glad nothing worse happened though because we were on an undivided highway with some pretty steady traffic for that early so had she swereved left instead of right she could've plowed into someone head-on.

The bus isn't too badly damaged so the insurance people are meeting us at the next stop and the state troopers gave us a copy of the report and sent us on our way in fairly short order. I've had fender benders in LA take longer so I'm thankful for the cops we dealt with. One of the responding troopers had the insignia and motto from the battalion I served with for my first couple years in the Marines so we swapped stories about people we both knew (he got there shortly after I was reassigned) and I managed to get a couple updates on some guys I had lost touch with. So that was an unexpectedly cool silver lining to getting hit by a drunk driver.

Anyways, on to the topical stuff... I'm starting off this morning on my modded Hifiman Audivinas. I have been mucking around with various adjustments and trial and error mods during my travels and I've got these cans sounding pretty good. Near as I can tell, Hifiman basically just shoved some quality drivers in a closed back cup and did almost nothing to dampen or control them so the modding process has mostly been about figuring out the best methods to dampen and control resonances created by the cups. If I get the time and inclination, I might put together a little guide describing the mods I experimented with and the ones I settled on, how to implement them, how each modifies the sound, etc. I'm driving them off the Schiit Magnius and Soekris 2541 being fed by a Wiim Pro and I'm quite proud of how good they're sounding. I should also mention that, now that the cups have more dampening material in them, the Audivinas have much better passive noise isolation than they did stock.

Up first in this morning's queue are Spaceking with their 2016 effort, The Piper at the Gates of Stone. First let me say that there are two Spacekings listed on Bandcamp so if you want to check these guys out, you'll be looking for the one based St. Petersburg, Russia. I stumbled upon this band while noodling around on Bandcamp searching for good stoner rock, psych rock, and stoner/psych metal bands. This band is definitely on the more metal end of the stoner rock spectrum though thenalso include some psychedelic elements, some post-metal style breakdowns, the occasional hard rock leaning riff, power metal shredding, etc. Their foundation is definitely hard charging stoner rock/metal with a deliberate and sludgy drive to it that is lightened and embellished by wonderful use of some light symphonic elements, layered song structure, and atmospheric effects. The opener, Ruins, and the title track are my two favorites, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed this album from start to finish.

To those about to rock, I salute you! 🤘🫡😎 (Note, I thought about using the beerchug emoji, but given the events of my morning it seemed somehow inappropriate 😂)

For some reason the cover/link is showing as "403 Forbidden" - I checked them out on Qobuz and can't see any reason it would be blocked. Added the album for listening session later on.

The link worked for me still, but I went ahead and edited it with a fresh link. Hopefully it works now. Let me know. 👍

Topical Shenanigans:

Still on the modded Hifiman Audivinas, but I've switched over to my modded Schiit Lyr (w/ Siemens Gold Pin ECC88s) and a Modi Multibit 2 fed by a Wiim Mini. Between the Lyr and the Audivinas, this rig has quite a few mods that represent many hours of work, experimentation, and tinkering that went into shaping them. The Lyr was more straightforward as most of the mods were simply component upgrades. It makes me all warm and fuzzy to think of what each was like when I first got them and what they've become with a bit of ingenuity and a little effort. Also, I have a ton of fun when I do mods and DIY builds and get to mold gear to my preferences. I learn things, get to practice problem solving and thinking outside the box, and get to have a bunch of fun listening and comparing the gear from one iteration to the next.

Up next in my queue is another 2016 album: Are You Synthetic? by Voyag3r. Voyag3r are a progressive psych/stoner rock band native to Detroit. Their music features a lot of synth tracks that coyld be straight out of the 80s. The rhythm section is tight knit, laying out a groove from the pocket and setting the table for some epic synth and guitar progressions. That formula is obviously the band's bread and butter, but they do also have the occosional track that flips the script, using the synths to keep time and join yhe rhythm section while the drums are drawn up to a more dynamic role supporting and sometimes driving the melody or a layered bridge. These guys have developed the kond of chemistry that only comes with countless hours of playing together and making sure every ones is on the same page. The easy, relaxed feeling that comes with that chemstry and confidence pervades the music and makes it fun to listen to. This album has layers for those that want to dig deeper, but also provides catchy riffs and a familiar pace for the listeners that are more inclined to a casual kicked back sesh. Two thumbs up from yours truly. 👍👍😎

Found this old CD with Jeff Beck I used to test my old 2Ch reference system. Ripped it and transfered to the WM1A. The above simple combo with WM1A/TrustedNI1/Pirole IEM is quite impressive.

Nubya Garcia Source (2020). Jazz/Afro-jazz. Just finished listening to this. Still brilliant as ever. Great album. Also love the album cover.
