Focal Elegia - what do you think?

by their warranty standards yes, it’s illegal. Import laws may be violated but that isn’t your problem as a buyer of grey market goods. That would be on the company of topic in this thread.
Hmmm...clearly Focal knows about it based on the discussions in this thread.

Seems like Adorama feels very confident in their position given they're so open about it on their site. That said, one would think it'd be easy to prosecute them/stop this illegal practice...if Focal was so inclined.

I’m not an attorney. As far as I can see, there is no law broken. There may be a case for unauthorized representation or possibly unauthorized use of IP. I don’t know, it’s not my area of expertise, I’m just an EE. Regardless, the loser is far more likely the consumer because Focal does not have to honor any warranty to any North American purchaser of product if purchased from a non-authorized sales entity or representative. Even a used sale must have been purchased by a consumer from an authorized dealer at the onset to have an intact warranty. Pretty typical really.

I’m not telling you what to do. If you feel the savings is a value added proposition, brother, have at it. The fact that a number of people on the site have also provided the facts giving solid information in my opinion should be appreciated. Good Luck and Sweet Listening Vibes! End of topic for me! :beerchug:

I think it's just nice to have the choice. Yes I could have waited for a sale on the Elegia (maybe Xmas time?) to get close to $500 but if you can live with the conditions (no mfg warranty, 30-day returns & 1yr warranty from seller) then you can make your own choice. I hope everyone is happy with the choice they make and enjoying the music, I know I am :)

Agreed...choice is always good!

Yeah they have a similar sound idk they just feel a bit thin to me, not as much definition/clarity, not as much soundstage. I think they are probably more like the Elear.

Did you try EQing the Elegia? I think they sound fantastic EQ’d to the Harman Target Curve. Alternatively, they could be made to sound very close to the signature of the Stellia by mimicking their frequency response curve.

Speaking of Elegia deals, has there been any notable deals in EU? Is there any place that could have eg. a black friday deal for Elegia?

Any suggested EQ settings?

I was using the settings from AutoEQ with HeSuVi. They should bring the Elegia to a very close match to the Harman Target Curve. On my smartphone now so a bit awkward with links, but if you search for AutoEQ you’ll find the GitHub repository with instructions and settings.

I'll have to try that when I get a chance to listen to them next. Thanks for the tips!

Perfect, thanks! Sadly, there's no one within hundreds of miles of Dallas that has any demo products, but that locator does helped me identify dealers that also sell online.

I'll throw Headphones.com into the ring as an authorized Focal Dealer as well since everyone's chiming in!

There are lots of great Focal dealers out there like us, Bloom, Audio46 and more that are fully authorized and aren't doing shady things with Focal's line-up.

Is there an official list of authorized dealers? I'm curious as to whether Audio46 is an authorized dealer -- they do sell Focal headphones, not sure about whether they are authorized, though.

From what we know they were booted a year ago for doing exactly these kinds of deals. The Elegia is a great headphone though and a steal at that price. You always run the risk of them breaking on day 366 though with no warranty support instead of the 5 years offered through an authorized dealer.

I found many EQ settings under that name, can you share the link of the EQ setting you use ?

Of course, I’ll try to post a link to it when I’m home. But basically I’m using the Elegia setting based on oratory1990’s measurements. As I’m using it through HeSuVi, the only file I can go for is the one called “GraphicEQ”, which is a txt filled with frequencies and gain numbers on a single row.

So, this is the page with the presets for Focal Elegia.

I do not know what the "minimum phase" ones are about. I use the one called "Focal Elegia GraphicEQ.txt" as that's what works with HeSuVi, but if you're using a different equalizer you can pick the appropriate preset for each. For example, when I use MusicBee to play FLAC files, I input the values from under the "Fixed Band EQ" header into its built-in EQ instead.
