Focal Elear and Utopia Review / Preview With Measurements - Head-Fi TV

The Elear looks like it's gonna make some serious waves. Looking forward to hearing it.

What I'm confused about is why Tyll hinted the Utopia will be replacing something on the wall of fame... but what can that be? At £4K what exactly is it gonna knock off? Tyll seems to be leaning towards price to performance now more than ever. At 3X the price of the 800S what kind of shake up is this gonna cause?

Probably the HE1000's.

Why did Focal make the stock cables so long? 13 ft seems a bit much especially if a shorter can't is not include too.. I guess they really want us to dance around the room.

Focal makes $250k speakers, I'm pretty sure they just assumed (rightfully so, to an extent?) most people buying their super expensive headphones will be using them in a large (living) room set up as well rather than "computer audiophiles" who tend to be right next to their gear nowadays. I'd say they're better off being safe than sorry, most of us more tech savvy computer set up people also know about all sorts of custom cable manufacturers whilst the "older school" may not.

Actually yes they do and it's called the Listen. It's like a very punchy version of the Spirit Pro with surprising bass for the money. (I didn't say that did I?) it's better build quality and great sound for under $400 retail is pretty impressive. It is closed back and and probably for most above average size heads better described as an on ear. A little small on the ear cups. But they are nice quality, comfortable and damn nice sounding for a $250 headphone. And guess what, they are available at most Focal authorized headphone dealers already. I believe we've sold 24 or so since they released about 10 days ago. So obviously people like them.

I'm not sure how exactly that relates to my post regarding their reasoning for making the standard cable length of the Elear/Utopia colossal but I agree - the Listen looks very nice for the money, I'm super curious to compare them to my old modded/balanced DT770s which I still love to this day after many years. My local dealer does not have them yet but when they do I'll pay them a visit.

Tyll confirmed what I said earlier in this thread, that the Elear (and Utopia) make the HD 800 and HD 800S sound noticeably bass-light when doing a direct side-by-side comparison.

And like Tyll, I would have also liked a couple of dB's more of sub-bass (<40Hz) for the Elear (and Utopia).  But as they are, I think that the Elear's have just enough low-end bass response to be considered a world-class headphone that no real excuses need be made for and are a straight-up bargain for what they offer for their price.

Thats because the 800 ans 800s are bass light

Oh dude! I'm so sorry! I was thinking I was responding to another post mentioning them as a $250 headphone. Now you know I'm very green at this blog thing! :anguished: .............wait that was your post! You mentioned the $250 set and I just expounded on that. It had nothing to do with the balance of your post

Nothing to apologise for sir, I absolutely understand! I was just a little confused but I assumed it had been some sort of quote mistake or misinterpretation of my post haha. It's all good Jason! I appreciate the input regarding the Listen too regardless, the fact you've sold over 20 already over a little over a week definitely seems people do indeed like them, if they are comfortable even as an over-ear for someone with a pretty big head and big ears such as myself then I'll most likely grab a pair when I purchase my Elear!

Asked Jason at the source to provide insight into where I can buy these. Anyone have any other place where I can purchase them? Also might be very early but wondering if there's insight into how much the post warranty repairs may cost I.e. Driver repair. Hopefully not too crazy!

So I responded to your PM but here's how it is. We are your only choice for ASAP as you requested. If you're patient enough you could have a choice of 32 other dealers. The other dealers will be delivering on or about the last week of August. Some in September. We will be shipping again on or about the 10th of August. So it's really only 2-3 weeks after us.

The warranty info you have isn't exactly correct. It's 1 year if purchased from a company that is e commerce only. If they have them on display it's 2 years. If you purchase from The Source AV it's 5 years backed by The Source AV & Focal for the full term of the 5 years.
