I'd say that price aside the decision is really how you feel about treble and bass. Bass on the 846s is superb. Treble is rolled off. 8s on the other hand has better and more treble but cannot reach the quality or quantity of the 846 bass. This is from memory. Sold the 846s before I got the 8s.
To my ears, bass is pretty comparable between the two with the red ULF and my modded black LF filters in the FLC8S. That's in comparison with SE846 + brown Knowles dampers (which are really needed to get some treble extension). SE846 can pump out more bass with stock blue or black filters, but then the treble suffers.

Wow. Impressive bass in those graphs. I've already got some great bass headphones (esp. Vega) so I haven't played with boosting the bass on the flc
The intent of the acoustic damping foam in my black LF filter is to tame the mid-bass a little. I'm not so keen on a boomy mid-bass, but I love that rumbly sub-bass :gs1000smile:

Both these IEMs do a great job of a nice linear rise from the mids to the sub-bass.

CSGLinux:

Memory fails me. Can you direct me to your posts that show how you modded the black LF filter?

Currently I use the FLC8S in red - grey - gunmetal. I had been in black - grey - gunmetal but recently went back to red ULF now that my FLC8S is broken in. So now I am thinking of fooling the black LF filter but last time I used it the result was a bit boomy for my taste. So your idea of a mod to tame it somewhat is interesting.

Thanks.

I had the same experience as you with the black LF filter - too boomy in the mid-bass :-( But the gray LF filter kills too much of the sub-bass, even when used with the red ULF :-( So I took just 0.5 mm^3 of acoustic damping foam and pushed it into the black LF filter. That's how I generated the previous FR graph.

@csglinux I'm curious, did you happen to make any measurements before modding the black filter and/or with the grey filter, to get a sense of how much effect your mod produces?
It would be great to see a plot of red/grey/gunmetal, red/mod-black/gunmetal, red/black/gunmetal...

If I can't find those measurements, I'll try to re-do them at the weekend. My recollection was that the modded black fell (roughly) between the gray and stock black LF filters.

Has anyone modified their green filter to have a larger "side-hole" (mids control)?
Or equivalently, knocked the filter out of their gold nozzle?

I quite like the green nozzle at reasonable volumes (more air, sense of space than gold or gunmetal), but feel the mids could use more amplitude with this amount of upper treble.

Are the FLC9’s available yet for purchase? Any links? I’m interested in the aluminum shells

BTW: I’m trying the Spinfit CP240’s ... so far so good ... I was getting tied of dealing with foam tips .. I was using foam tips from ‘Earphones Plus’

Hi friends, is flc 9 released. Also can anyone compare flc8 with ie80. Which one is well balanced and sounds natural.

The IE 80 will always sound bassier and fuller than the FLC8s, no matter what filter is used. It is because it is a quite bassy in-ear, even with the screw in its lowest position.
The IE 80 has got the larger, more open soundstage. However, spatial separation is quite a bit better on the FLC8s. If you like your B3 Pro I and HD 598, I would say the FLC8s would be the better choice.

thank you for making my choice easy.. I don't like much bass but only bass details... I'll go with flc8s.
