It depends how dirty it gets, although even if you feed it pellets which dont really dirty the tank, it could still be dirty because of urine which you may not be able to see.
I suck out the bottom of uneaten food and dirt with a turkey baster whenever i see some in there, and once a week i do a full water change. Some people do a partial water change, but i find that after i remove half the water, when i go to put the water back in, it stirs up the bottom and particals are floating all over the place, so i say screw it and i change all the water.
I also add a pinch of marine aquarium salt to it. Just a smidgin!!! Also PRIME water conditioner.
I must be doing something right because they are happy.

Its very hard to have an exact way of taking care of these fish.
Ive looked at writings from all different people that have been raising and breeding Bettas for many years, and they all disagree.

Feed 2x a day, no feed 1 time a day...no feed 3 x a week,, feet pellets only....feed a varied diet.

Nobody agrees.

I feed 2x a day.

Morning is 2 pellets.
Evening is flakes, or blood worms(dried mosquito larvae) But the female will wat the worms, my males wont eat it.
Sundays they fast....no food
Monday morning ....a piece of the inside of a cooked pea, to clean them out
Monday evening.... pellets...or maybe 1 pellet and some flakes

Mine are happy and a good weight, and active, so i guess its fine.

Oh, and mine are named Aeropastale (Aero),, and Hollister.
My sister named her female, Reba .
