I'm using X7 FW2,0 as a DAC, amplified by Liquid Carbon to H800S balanced.

It sounds good, VERY good. Running HD800S balanced is a must, it improved dynamism and precision. More holographic sound stage!
You get this already with an AM3  and LC improved everything.
On the minus side, the bass could be more present and punchy. Also I'm missing some "naturalness" in the tones which I attribute to the Sabre.
As  said many times, HD800's are incredibly revealing and force you to have higher quality gear in the rest of the chain.
I plan to upgrade the DAC which will leave the X7 as transport only and mobile DAP when travelling.

My AM3 amp module just arrived today. Swapped out the AM5 unit and installed the balanced harness I had on hand for my SH1540s and gave it a rip.

Compared to the AM5 the AM3 with balanced setup seems a to improve the SQ, but I would hardly call it a huge change.

Anyway, I'm very happy with my X7 unit. I run mine in Pure Music mode as I don't need any of the android apps. I use mine as a basic played and it is running superbly on FW 2.0.

Question, when will we be able to OTA update? I've already backed up/reformatted/updated about 3 times, that's 3 times too many lol.

UPDATE:
If you have already upgraded the X7's firwmare to the FW3.0beta or a later version, you can download the OTA firmware package, transfer it to the X7 or micro SD card, and upgrade manually through the Technical support app on the X7.

Forget everything I said, I'm a silly boy.

In terms of what attracts me to the X7; offline storage for Tidal would be a big plus point & the other main interest point is that I've read a few opinions that the X7 bests the AK70 in terms of SQ.

Unfortunately, offline storage for Tidal doesn't work on the X7 on firmware 2.0. It may work on the newer beta firmware, though I'm not 100% sure about that (I don't have a Tidal subscription to try it out on).

It doesn't work on later fw either.

Can you elaborate please?, perhaps with an example.
Thank you

It is more something that I don't hear than the contrary. Something that triggers emotion. I can't  put a name on it.
I  remember getting that with my old Marantz SA-11S1 which is broken since quite some time. Perhaps I should fund the expensive repair?
Or is it my upgraditis trying to justify buying a new R2R DAC

Maybe I'll do both
