"Anyone else use their X5iii as the DAC for the PC? I'm still getting the Lag when I start using it, it seems to take a second or two before catching up" WayTooCrazy

I also use this function most of the time, streaming Apple Music from my Macbook and have noticed the occasional lag when starting songs but didn't think anything of it. Will listen again, now you have mentioned it!

I just got the X5 3rd gen and I'm finding the sound somewhat muffled. When I turn the Fiio music app equalizer on, the volume goes down a bit and equalizer doesn't do anything. Not sure why. How do I get that amazing sound everyone is talking about? I play 24 bit hd flac with B&O H7 headphones and the sound isn't impressive to me. Also, I am on latest firmware (1.1.6). My X5 is definitely genuine. I checked on fiio site. At first, I questioned the authenticity of my device since it doesn't have the Fiio logo on the bottom front. I think it's just a newer revision though.

Muffled (I called it veiled) sound - for my ears the same and Fiio software should improve with clarity of sound fixing software (I am using rooted one so I am happy with the sound now). Fiio equalizer it is working as professional one - on attenuation base - if you rise 6db (by my opinion it should be 12 or 16db) at 16khz (can't understand that HR player EQ ends at 16, not at 20kHz or at 32kHz) all others goes down 6db, and you need to rise volume at least 6db.

Well, if there is anything that should be "fixed" in sound clarity in your opinion and you have the solution handy, then it would be a good move to share it with Fiio, otherwise there is little sense in asking the manufacturer to fix something (that other people even do not consider to be broken).

I do respect everybody's opinion, but I would not consider the X3iii muffled, if something, I would say "rich" would be a better word. However, I know that different settings, different results.

I would call it, just a little on the warm side of neutral. Again, today, I was listening to the Aeon on mine. I thought it sounded very, very nice. No sibilance nor sharpness. Just a nice rich midrange that makes voices sound natural. Like Anya is sitting in the room singing, or Allison Kraus (can be a bit screechy to me) is in a small club with a good PA. Still guitars have the right bight, chimes and cymbals ring true and shimmer. It definitely does not match at all with my definition of that word... but again, words like that are not well defined in the audio world... so who knows.
Anyway, all of this is so relative it almost doesn't bear discussing.

With the proper material and headphones, and especially for the asking price I think the X5 III is a fine piece of audio gear. Does the UI still have some warts for certain people, sure, but they have been fixing things and I am sure will continue to do so.

@FiiO
Hello,

To wake up the display: (when i have a song on pause ....and this song file on the sd card slot 2)

If screen lock is actived on Android setting when i push the play/pause physical button, i return on the screen lock and i see disapear my song

If screen lock is not actived on android setting when i push the play/pause physical button, i return on fiio music application, try to read the song but freeze and return on start menu of fiio music application.

I really think That sd card slot number 2 is unmount when is not on use on stand-by display mode. And too long to mount on wake up ...
We havé no problem with the slot one... is always mount.

Please refer this issue :)

Thanks for your help.

Dear friend,

Thank you for your kind feedback. I have reported to our engineers about that. If we have any new progress, we will keep in touch with you.

Best regards

@FiiO - Very happy with the 1.1.6 update, especially the playlist/most recently added track fix. I find the sound overall slightly improved over 1.1.5 (which I was pretty happy with anyway) but still it seems that the 1.0.9 sound signature is the best. Is there any chance your engineers could keep all the system fixes from the updates but revert to the 1.0.9 sound signature?

Thanks again for the great product and excellent updates and support. Very happy with my X5III :)

Dear friend,

According the feedback from our engineer, the parameters haven't been changed in each firmware update. But we will still report to them and have them reference.

Best regards

Dear friend,

Why does the volume decrease when EQ is enabled?

The equalizer is implemented in the digital processing stage, and includes a filter stage and a digital gain stage. Volume is controlled after digital-analog conversion. The equalizer filter can effect a maximum increase of 6dB in a frequency band; if this is done without lowering the digital gain, it could cause the digital signal to clip at 0dBFS and cause audible distortion. Lowering the analog volume afterwards has no effect on the distortion. Thus to preserve signal integrity, a digital gain of -6dB is added when equalizer settings are enabled to avoid clipping. This does not affect audio quality except in so far as you need to turn up the volume afterwards.

Best regards

It does lower the volume and it's pretty noticeable. When I was playing music, I enable the EQ to try something and immediately notice a drop in volume then I stopped using it.

@FiiO, the recent inquiry had me test USB audio output on FW 1.1.6 as well. I'm sad to report that the X5 III is downsampling everything to 44.1kHz through USB. I thought you were bypassing Android and outputting bitperfect. I also see that all 24/192 files are being downsampled to 96kHz with coaxial output.

I know your reply will be that you're looking in to it and will try in an upcoming firmware update, sorry for the inconvenience. I only request that you continue to work on this and hopefully you won't take too long.

Dear friend,

Yes, you know what I may say. The engineers are still working in it but I fail to get their new progress by now. As the function haven't been improved in a good status, it may have serial issues still. We also hope it won't take too long. :punch:Thanks for the kind support.

Best regards

I'm curious as to how people are getting their X5iii's to work with a Mojo. I've tried everything and all options have very loud white noise / interference over the top of the mstage sic, to the point it is completely unlistenable (I.e can barely make out what I'm listening to).

I've tried USB, and also bought the Penon Audio coax cable but both show the same issue.

What app are people using? Ideally I want to be able to stream using dlna, but at this stage would settle for playing off the Sdcards. On my phone I use USB Audio Player Pro, and it works flawlessly. Are there any other settings I should be conscious of?

It's driving me nuts that the two advertised features I bought the X5iii for (dlna streaming and audio over USB) do not work. The primary purpose for my purchase was to use it was a transport for my mojo.

I just use the FiiO Music app and it plays, but with the caveats I listed earlier. What files are you trying to play? I notice that above somewhere between 5000-5500 kbps PCM files there is the white noise issue. DSD64 plays without white noise but above that it's been reported to be heard. Like you, I bought the X5III as a transport and for this use I'm very disappointed in it.

Edit: I'm also using a coaxial cable from Penon audio as well as a Dyson Audio coaxial cable.

I use purely FLAC, and nothing higher than 24/192 (which are few and far between). Not even. My 16/44.1 work properly though, so that's definitely not the issue.

If the Fiio Music apps dlna streaming work, I'd use that but it doesn't...

I think I'm going to try and return the unit as it is not fit for purpose and a number of the advertised features simply don't work

If you are just looking for a DAP as source for your mojo, I think you should return the X5III if it is not meeting your main requirements. Since the songs will bypass internal DAC of the DAP once you link to the Mojo, there are many choices that you have for this, and don't make sense to pay for X5III with Dual DAC when you are not optimising the DAC.

The Shanling M1 will be a better pair I think, and it is a much cheaper choice for your purpose. Or if streaming is crucial, probably just the iPhone or an Android phone will be better to leverage on the Mojo DAC?
