FiiO X5 2nd gen Impressions and Discussion thread

Fwiw, I also bounce from the latest FW back to 1.2. for the OTG. I use an external 1TB drive that uses an external power supply. It recognizes it with no problem and plays like it was reading from the sd cards., Its not portable but as a standalone going thru my sounds system it really works well.

I gotta find a drive that will work now.
Which drive are you talking about, Phil?

Its an HP SimpleSave 1TB.I did try my other external drives but I think because this one has an external power source is the reason why this one works. My other ones the light came on but it didnt sound like the plate was spinning. I guess theres not enough power output to drive the mechanical drives. Havent tried with my SSD but I am curious if that works. If I find my spare drive I'll format it and try. Hope that helps.

Is there one place where we can see what we gain and lose with each fw update?
Shouldn't the Fiio site list the changes for each update?

Right now I reverted back to 1.0 to regain the OTG function.
I'm not sure I can stand the lagging though.

Thanks, Phil.
I'm hoping to find at least a 500GB drive that won't need to be powered separately.
Perhaps the power issue is why Fiio dropped the OTG capabilities.
I noticed my Pono doesn't offer it.
With the X5ii fw 1.2 my 16GB thumb drive works right now.

Hi all, I've been considering if I should buy the FiiO X5II but I do not know all of my options yet in it's price range of AUD$439.90 or USD$335. Any suggestions on alternatives for the FiiO X5II will be greatly appreciated!

1. Latest FW is best right now.

2. I would add to your list Fiio's own EX1, which sound lovely and Finder X1 from Echobox, which have a really treble happy sound, close to grado. You can also consider Sennheiser momentum instead of ie80, they have a more fun sound, more bass and treble. Ie80 is very good on it''s own right though.

Fiio X3ii, But fiio X5ii is probably the best DAP I heard in it's own range so far.

I'm also looking forward for hearing other DAPs, but so far I found that X5ii is the best DAP for my tastes.

x5ii and grado is excellent coupled.

I really love Grado house sound

I wish I knew where to sweet spot is for Grado headphones in general so that I could get one, Romanian dealer is very cold when I want to listen Grado headphones from them. They have only SR60 and SR125 on display anyways, but I really want to know where Grado shines best for my tastes.

What I'm really enjoying the most from the X5ii are my LP rips. These are mostly jazz albums from the mid-50's, and a bunch of ECM albums from the 70's and 80's. I kept most of these in pristine condition, so the pops and clicks are pretty minimal.

We have one of those jerks in my city too.
This guy thinks people come in, find what they want then go order online for cheaper.
What's crazy is his prices match what's online so why would anyone go elsewhere?

I wanted to see if there was something in my price range that I'd prefer over my 650's.
They were just a little veiled for me.
I was especially interested in the Beydynamic line since I've never heard one.
I asked if I could hear two models off the wall of demos.
He told me to come back once I sold my Sennies and had the cash in my pocket.

Needless to say I've never been back and would rather give up listening to music before I do.

Do you have an Amazon in your area?
They know we need to hear for ourselves so they offer a full refund if not satisfied.
Just be wary of third party sellers on Amazon who charge you the shipping back costs and sometimes a substantial restocking fee.
