FiiO Q7 Portable Desktop-Class DAC and Headphone Amplifier Discussion & Impressions Thread

Are you meaning the sound in general is different or specifically with the second harmonic feature ?
Sound in general. Nothing to do with the second harmonic feature. I have not been able to hear any differences but Fiio mentioned it is only noticeable at higher volumes.

I see no reason why that would be any different on the Q7 versus any other device. I am not sure how you A/B test for subtle changes when you have to update the firmware in between times, unless of course you have access to two Q7 with different firmware and an A/B switch set up.
You're correct. This is why I said I could be biased because I spent more time testing the demo unit that was on the old firmware. There is no anecdote evidence firmware would change the sound signature and there is no reason to. So I am dismissing what I heard as placebo.

The output impedance of the single ended output will be lower so that might have an effect on the sound if using very low impedance IEM, more than the difference in power would I would venture.
This is true. I noticed the single ended output being lower so I thought that could be the case. I preferred the SE output with the IE 600 because bass tones sounded 'rounder'. With the BAL output, the bass sounded too clean if that makes sense. However I will say the BAL side makes improves separation considerably. It is just that good. I also have the IER-M7 and I prefer that set on the BAL side.

Would love to hear how Q7 compares to other portable amps in the <$1000 price bracket

Could the FiiO Q7 power supply be overkill at 12V/2A/24W ? I checked with a power measuring device and it outputs only 12V/0.35A/4.2W in Ultra High Gain with my Denon D9200 at high volume and 4.4mm balanced cable. I wonder how high the power draw can go with harder to drive headphones.

Edit : i also tried with a 150ohm 3.5mm adapter and power draw was about 0.27A/3.2W in Ultra High Gain at maximum volume (120)

I suppose you were measuring the average current/power consumption. Have you tried to measure the peak values in sub-millisecond resolution?

There are other things that you have not accounted for.

1. During DC fast charging where Q7 will draw current at 12V. Not sure if it is charging at 2A but the Q7 does top charge relatively quickly even during usage.
2. Q7's own power consumption

The power supply will send as much current at 12V as needed up to its maximum rated 12V/2A (24W). I believe you're right in that there may be some extra headroom which is always nice.

Nope, my tester is pretty basic.

Yep, you'll need an oscilloscope (even the most basic one) to see the output properly. With a sustained signal playing - then you'll see the realtime power output of the device.

Photo sample below, here's me using an oscilloscope to volume match my devices (crazy experimentation of mine back then)

I'm an idiot  I didn't think about the charging of the battery, i just tested it and it draws about 1.2A/14.4W when charging.
It still leaves about 10W of headroom.

I'm glad you're exploring on this

In addition to battery charging consumption

You can adjust your music amplitude to try, such as using 0dB,-3dB sine wave, so as to achieve the maximum power

We designed the maximum power, in our normal listening music is not used to, he is only for some extreme conditions to prepare. In order to make these extreme conditions of the output can still maintain the perfect sound performance

As some cars are designed, the maximum power how much N.m, but we only in rare cases to use it :beerchug:

@FiiO my device fails on the update firmware to 1.09.

Its showing updating on the screen and dont respond to any button, even the reset one
Dear friend,

Sorry to hear about that. Did you update the Q7 via the Windows computer? Please try to reset the Q7 when connecting it to the computer via USB.
Does the issue remain?
When and where did you buy the product? Can your seller help? If not, please send the receipt to us(support@fiio.com). Thanks in advance!

Best regards

Thanks for your faster response.

Yep, already contacted. Im gonna let the battery empty, hope it restart the system when turn on again.

Connect to my windows computer (wich already use for the first firmware update to 1.04) dont recognised by the fiio dfu app.

Like I said, im gonna try to let the battery empty. Wish me luck! 🤙

Anyone having a slight jitter when playing MQA from iPhone via Tidal? At the start of every track there are two pauses/jitters (about five seconds into the song). After that it’s fine. Playing from Apple Music it’s fine. On latest firmware.
