The New X3 Gen II and the X5 currently support OTG connections.  This feature is likely to remain in the X5 and X7 families.

OTG allows users to access storage devices for playback beyond built in microSD cards.  In the case of the X3 Gen 2 that would extend memory beyond the current microSD limit of 128gb.
In the case of the X5, that extends memory beyond 256gb (128gb x 2).

The following is known about the OTG support:

Owing to some limitations of the controller board, the X5 currently only supports USB storage utilizing USB controllers from specific brands, specifically: Skymedi, ITE, Innostor, SiliconGo, Phison, and CBM. If you are not sure of what brand of USB controller your USB driver utilizes, you can directly download the PC utility (Identification tool for the main control chip of the U Flash Disk) for checking, and here is the link for download:
http://pan.baidu.com/s/1mgDSCEs

One would need both an OTG connecting cable from the microusb port on the FIIO unit to the supported memory device.

At this juncture, it would appear than many USB sticks are supported.  It is possible that some SD format cards are supported.  The mySSD family of USB connected drives appears to work at this use Phison circuitry.

Please chime in with your experiences and lets all use this thread as a way of helping each other out.  I know that I like having additional music available beyond the 128gb limit as I tend to listed to FLAC files and hi res flac files can be quite large.  DSD files are even bigger!

The Integral 512gb SSD works perfectly with the X5

I do find it infuriating that the firmware doesn't allow OTG storage to be scanned into the library. Fiio did give me their reasoning in another thread (a fear of device going into lengthy automatic library scans every time the OTG storage is connected or disconnected) but why they can't give us the option of whether to scan the OTG or not is beyond me. OTG compatibility is a huge selling point in a DAP for me so compromising it in this way makes no sense at all.

I am glad someone started a thread for the topic.  Could you provide some links to OTG products that work on the X3II?  I am looking for a OTG MicroSD card reader similar to:

My current working hypothesis is that what matters is the controller chip on the storage device. If it comes from a supported vendor there is a good shot it will work. I have some old sandisc units with small capabilities that work in sd. So it can be done in theory. But none of my pny sd cards worked.

This one seems like a great deal to extend capacity by 128GB for $30 USD.

@originalsnuffy any thoughts if this one will work?  I searched the amamzon reviews and no hits on the USB controller brands you listed. I would probably pair this with the monoprice cable http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=9724&seq=1&format=2

I have no experience with the monoprice otg adapters. But in general I think the limiting factor is the controller chipset on the storage medium and not the choice of otg adapter. Though I did see a post stating that some otg adapters were wonky. That same post did mention monoprice positively. As a vendor in general I do endorse monoprice

The Sandisk mentioned above is a likely winner as I had success with a Sandisk 32gb stick. Also good success with pny 256gb. I would stick with fat32 formatting for now.

Still scratching my head on sd cards. Not sure how to predict which if any will work.

Looking for feedback from others. We should all encourage posting to this thread rather than Random sprinkles on various fiio threads

I am using a PNY 128gb micro in a OTG card reader off eBay with no problems. DSD files too.
I had filled the card with a mix of 24/192 and DSD files formatted in exfat that worked fine on the 24/192's but had a lot of stuttering with the DSD. Reformatted using the fiio to fat32 and no problems now.

Which PNY card are you using?  This one? http://www.amazon.com/Performance-128GB-Speed-microSDHC-Memory/dp/B00OP2P0ZO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431895015&sr=8-1&keywords=128+gb+pny+microsd

  Yes that's the one.

Did you happen to run that card through the program originalsnuffy linked in the first post?  http://pan.baidu.com/s/1mgDSCEs  If so, does it show a USB controller from a specific a brand: Skymedi, ITE, Innostor, SiliconGo, Phison, and CBM.

I ran a few cards and USB sticks through the program.  I didn't have too much luck identifying the USB controller.  That info is confidential.  I asked PNY, Sandisk, Samsung and Lexar for the controllers in their chips and they all stated it is confidential info.

I emailed Integral's customer service if their SSD drive had a Phison chip, and they were happy to confirm this.

Oh yes, I have it in a stack with the X5 and E12. battery life is probably shortened a bit, but I haven't measured how much. I have 2 64gb cards in the X5 plus 512gb on the SSD. Nearly 19,000 FLAC lossless plus a few hundred hi-res FLAC files at my fingertips !!
