Just ordered from Voptronics. Interesting to note, I think they updated the shipping price and description. I think before it said global something and was $7.20 or so. Now it’s $15 and says:

“Delivered duty-paid, taxes paid by the carrier. Estimated Delivery Time: 8-12 working days”

I guess you will be a tariff tester, it will be interesting to see how and if they apply the tariff once it reaches US customs.

I found this statement on the US Customs site (US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have announced that the new rules will apply based on arrival date). Also, (Tariffs are based on the Country of Origin (aka Manufacture) for the product and not on the Country of Export for the shipment. In other words, Chinese goods shipped to Canada or Singapore cannot avoid the higher tariffs or qualify for de minimis.) So it would seem based on this that ordering products from China before May 2nd won't avoid the additional charges if they are received by US Customs after May 2nd. Also, having someone from Canada mail your parcel to the US won't avoid these charges either if intercepted by Customs.

Clearly based on these statements it would be better to wait for the tariff's to be reduced or removed before ordering Chinese DAP's.

I for one am in no rush to order my M21, will definitely wait for user posts and reviews. Given that the JM21 had 6 firmware updates in 6 months I am willing to bet the M21 will need a few as well. For once I am glad I am back living in Canada and not still living in the states.

Ok, I’m going to see if they’ll cancel my order. I thought people were saying not to worry about it but I definitely don’t want to be on the hook for additional charges.

I suppose the worst case scenario is that they ship the M21, it leaves China before May 2nd, arrives at a US Point of Entry on or after May 2nd and you get notified that there are additional fees owing that equates to the tariff amount. You will have to either pay the fees or forfeit the item. CBP will then sieze the item and sell it at auction to collect the fees owed. Maybe a strategy will be to track these auctions in a few months and see if you can get a NIB device for a discount...

Yeah, that seems awful. I assume if I forfeit I just lose the $330 I paid, but I’m also screwed if they tell me I owe hundreds in fees or something.

Hopefully they can cancel since I can’t imagine it’s shipped since the order I placed last night

I don't know if it will actually be released or if it's just a design study, but James Chung (CEO and founder of FiiO) posted the image below with the following statement:

"A minimalist-style portable player featuring a dual-knob design for quick volume adjustment and sound style switching.

The back panel is made of northern black walnut, continuing the same design language as FiiO's best-selling FT1."

Well, they will tell you owe fees and if you don't pay them you lose your shipment. I don't think there is any legal issue as it technically never entered the country if it was held by CBP. If you tried to smuggle it in there would certainly be a whole new set of issues.

Hmm...I like the design of this better, mainly because of the volume knob. Hope we do see it. (Would this be an alternate M21 or another product altogether?)

I didn’t say anything about smuggling? Not sure I understand what that has to do with my response. I’m saying both options you said sound bad to me - either I refuse to pay the fees and I lose the shipment and the $330 I paid Voptronics, or I pay the fees that could be hundreds more

Sorry -I never implied you would - that would be the only way you would be owing $$$ even if you didn't keep the device.

Right. Mostly it just sounds like from what you’re saying I’m screwed either way if they don’t cancel my order. Either I’ll be on the hook for expensive fees, or if I refuse they seize it and I’m out the $330 I paid.

The M27 is scheduled to be released in June, any chance this could be an early photo of the M27?

As for those of you in the US that have already placed orders, if you can't cancel your order perhaps it would be worthwhile to contact US Customs and find out what your options are. I had to contact them several times on import shipments when I worked in Import/Export management. They are usually pretty helpful and obviously this is a situation alot of people will face so there me be some options available that don't involve you losing all your money. Perhaps they can ship it back to the seller and when they get it back you might be able to negotiate a refund. Not saying it will be an option but it might be worth looking into.

Another option would be take your M21, pay the fees and then return it to the seller for a refund and at least get some of your money back.
