I have a Fiio E7 that I bought last summer and I heard something here on the threads about Fiio updating the E7 somehow. I was wondering how to determine which revision you have and what the changes are in these revisions.

The new version is louder at max volume, that's all. It came out after last August, IIRC.

Is that a hardware change or software change, do you know?

The only change is the gain, from the original 3dB to now 5dB. That's about it.

But is the gain increased by changing the circuits, or is it by changing the firmware I wonder? I suppose it doesn't matter really, it's just a trival question.

Gain is almost always set by hardware. Software can limits gain, but not increases it (can't make something out of nothing). Setting gain on hardware is also pretty easy usually, just change the value of a couple of resistors.
