Does the FiiO E10 volume knob only change the volume of the headphone output on the front? That's all mine controls. Not sure if I have a faulty unit or not, as it seems a strange design choice...

output on the front??? It's....a volume knob that is set in intergers to balance L and R if i remember correctly

Yes, the volume knob only controls the headphone out on the front.  The jack in the back is a line level out.
