Ferrum OOR - headphone amplifier with a soul ?

Is it worth it to add the oor+hypsos in my collection?

This pains me more than anyone can know (and apologies to the thread), but I have to be brutally honest here.

Have for a long time been in love with my OOR/Hypsos stack but, I'm afraid - for me, in my system at least, it can't match a Cen.Grand 9i-906 'Silver Fox' I've just acquired...simply outstanding. However, it's far bigger than the Ferrums, which isn't for everyone of course. And I still say that for a smaller footprint HP amp, the Ferrum stack is hard to beat IMHO. And I shall indeed miss its neat, attractive features lol.:worried:

So, just another option for you to compare, if at all possible...

Edit : ps... However, every cloud etc etc.....Have replaced my Chinese LPS feeding the TT2/mscaler combo (better than the stock SMPSs) with Hypsos and - wow, greater improvement to final sound outcome than I ever anticipated so, happily, softens the bitter sweet blow somewhat...:)

If it happens that I ever decide to change out the Ferrum OOR for another amp, I may sell the amp but I will not sell the Hypsos PSU. The Hypsos is a worthy piece of kit on it's own.

Hi,
I own the OOR+Hypsos and they synergize wonderfully with my Hifiman HKV2 Stealth.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to improve the performance with ZMF headphones (I own the Aeolus and the VO), though. Maybe there is some kind of voltage setting that makes them shine a little more?

I’m interested because I heard the oor+hypsos sounds savory haha
No. If I were you I’d be looking for a tube solution. The Ferrum stack is very neutral with just a touch of warmth. I’d be surprised if you’d notice much of a difference between your Burson Voyager and the Oor.

If you’re looking for something “savory” as you described it you’ll only really find that in a tube amp.

Hi, waiting for the delivery of the Wandla, could you please share your consideration about the output voltage adjustment to use with hypsos to power both Oor and Wandla?

Is

it better use the Oor as powe amp or the Wandla?

I mean in which one I set the bypass mode?
Set Oor in bypass mode better, and use wandla as the volume control.

I tried both bypass mode. Oor in bypass mode sounds better for me.

I'm surprised there aren't more people out there using tube preamps with the Oor in bypass mode.

Not a whole lot of headphone amps out there that allow you to fully bypass their volume control.

I’ve found I really like using DACs with tube output like my Abbas dac. A lot of these cottage dacs tend to only output single-ended and can come across a little anemic. Sending it through the Wandla as a preamp to convert to balance than send it to the Oor with XLR really gives them the voltage boost they need to shine and brings a rich sweetness character to the Oor which I found a little dry when I first got it and didn’t care for at first. After some time on the shelf and coming back to it with better source equipment I realize what I’ve been missing. The Wandla as a DAC is great too but it’s very punchy, I tend to like it with electronic and pop more so than classical or jazz which shines better on tubes.

Just have a question regarding the gain settings. I use OOR in bypass mode with Hypsos, and the gain settings should be disabled, and the gain is anyway stay at 0db. But when I rotate the button from 0 to "+db", I do see a slight increase in the "output power" showed on the Hypsos screen. It is around 0.2W more power output when in "+db". This is weird as the gain settings should already been disabled.

Do I enjoy the extra 0.2W output from OOR, or is this just a technical issue?

Thanks!

The preamp circuit will engage and draw power but as the preamp circuit is not in the signal path in bypass mode it will just dissipate 0.2W extra without doing anything
