As Doug says they may well settle down after some time too

Both of the ones I got were bad. One was incredibly noisy and the other didn’t light up or make sound but got insanely hot quickly. It’s had specs inside the glass which is something I’d never seen. Was offered a replacement but I got a refund instead which was given quickly. I never have any hesitation with Langrex since the few times I’ve had issues they’ve always quickly addressed them.Got the Brimars in. They do great right off the bat, but one of them is noisy - staticky sounding. I'm assuming this won't go away with time? Should I reach out to Langrex to have it replaced?![]()
Flip sides of a coin with langrex, zero testing for noise (tester only) but will replace no problem. I don't get why they don't put a pair of cans on and just listen for five minutes before putting tubes on the for sale shelf. Both of the ones I got were bad. Thanks guys.If you swap them over does the static move with it?
One of the first things I always do with NOS tubes now is clean the pins with a fibreglass pen. Might be worth a bash.
Langrex will take them back if there is a issue though.
Again, give them some run time if genuine NOS. Not sure what others do but I'll generally give them a week run time (aim for 100hrs) then it's time to start making noises with the seller. Thanks guys.
Yes, I did swap them over and the static switches sides. I'll give the pins a clean and try that.
When music is playing, I barely hear it, but when it's silent it's there, so definitely either needs to go away or I need a new pair.
Regardless of that, they sound amazing. My favorite 6SN7 I've heard on the Envy for sure!
Side note - I also got a pair of NOS RCA 2a3s to try in my WA23. I had some headphone connected when I started the amp up and one of them started sparking (internally) and I heard a pop and crackling in my headphones and, upon listening, the driver on that side is no longer getting sound. Ugh. Is this kind of a thing a hazard with NOS tubes? I didn't even think to unplug headphones before letting it power up this time. The sound is fine now and the RCAs actually sound amazing, but upon powering down and powering back up (without headphone connected), it did the same sparking thing with the same tube. I bought these from Tube Depot, so hopefully they'll help me out with this situation.
Yeah fibreglass pen can help but I wouldn't spend too much time on it if it doesn't help and just return them. Glad you've found another pair you like. Thanks guys.

Yeah, I'll give it some time. I think that's fair.Again, give them some run time if genuine NOS. Not sure what others do but I'll generally give them a week run time (aim for 100hrs) then it's time to start making noises with the seller.
Some tubes recover, some don't...
I've still got minor noise with that set of '51 brimars. If it doesn't go by the end of the weekend then they'll be an unfortunate RTS. The joys of tubes...
Can’t do much with a bent pin but these Riffler files are great for excess solder etc.Yeah fibreglass pen can help but I wouldn't spend too much time on it if it doesn't help and just return them. Glad you've found another pair you like.
I had to get my Melz resoldered twice before they were silent but that's a common thing with those.
If a tube is faulty you do normally hear it right away. I've had a few pairs of NOS that sounded like a plane coming into land. In both cases I panicked a bit and dived for the off switch and immediately returned them. It's always possible with NOS I think.
As doug says its a shame they don't do any more than just test them as they would know right away before selling. They may test fine but be as noisy as hell. Just plug some cans in.
I finally got some Melz 6N8S (mouse ears) to try out. They look good but one pin is bent and the solder is a bit thick so they won't fit in my Woo socket savers.
I'll send them to my tube guy to see what he can do but I was tempted just to return them as tbh I couldn't be bothered to deal with them. I'm sure they'll be good though and I had to resolder my other pair twice but it was worth it as they are still in my top 2 or 3. We'll see what he says.
Good luck
