The 2G ipod itouch can be an sip phone and you can get a phone number for it. Microphones are available from the apple store as well as 3rd party.

Google youtube for huskermania and then search for "How to Call Your iPod Touch And Give It A Phone Number For Free"

How do you guys go about finding the apps you want - there are so many applications out there now in the app store (most of which are crap) that I find it a major chore finding something decent by any means other than trial and error...

Any easier way?

Good call on Tranquil Alarm analogbox! I've been using the clock as my alarm, but the built in alarm sounds are horrible. I just downloaded Tranquil alarm and it looks very promising.

As for my favorite apps, they are:
Mail
iTV
Rememberthemilk
Weather
Pandora
