And if we're going to Africa looking for guitar heroics, let's not forget to stop off in Nigeria:

Dittoes to all of the great "out" albums mentioned (Ornette stuff, Sharrok, Ulmer, ...). There's been an awful lot of great guitar music recorded. Some more:

Pat Martino - Live, Baiyina (especially cool), ...

How can we forget Mahavishnu's "Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire"?

Coryell - Dragon's Gate, The Restful Mind, Spaces (with McLaughlin as "second guitarist").

Miles Davis - Jack Johnson

Terje Rypdal - Odyssey

Stevie Ray Vaughan - damned near anything

Most Richard Thompson music, for me, especially the electric stuff; my brother, the guitarist, prefers the acoustic.

Ronald Shannon Jackson Decoding Society - Mandance.

I'm just trying to restrain myself from naming Mick Taylor on his run with the Stones. My answer to every thread on this forum can't be Exile and Sticky Fingers. People will start tuning me out (if they haven't already).

I also happen to think Diblo is our greatest living guitarist, but I didn't want to state that either, for fear people would dismiss me as a crackpot, or worse, an obscurantist. I saw him in a small club in Philly in 1993 and I almost had a heart attack he was so good.

King Sunny Ade is sublime.

I dunno…if you ask me, this forum could use a few more "crackpots."

How 'bout we go to Brazil?

João Gilberto

MANY come to mind but I'm lazy, so here's one: G3 Live w/ Eric Johnson

I have a new one that I quite like. It is Rodrigo y Gabriela with their self titled album "Rodrigo y Gabriela".
These guys are crazy. They are two very fast fingered Mexicans. They also use their guitars for percussion. Check them out.

An impossible question to answer, really, because there are so many.
Not specifying the album makes it easier. A few of my favorite guitarists include:

Lindsey Buckingham
Jimi Hendrix
David Gilmore
Lee Ritenour
Steve Tibbets
Joe Satriani
Bill Frissel
Marc Knopfler
John McLaughlin
Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Johannes Linnestead
Fred Frith
Snakefinger
Buckethead
Chuck Loeb
Steve Tibbets
The Edge
John Scofield
Bruce Cockburn
Ottmar Liebert
Govi
George Harrison
Pat Metheny
Phil Manzanera
Eric Clapton

...and many more, but those are the ones I can think of just off the top of my head (no doubt I will think of a dozen more within an hour of posting this.)

Guys, please...let's not turn this into a name dropping contest. The OP asked for albums. I like to use these threads to check out albums as well. I always have time to take a look at an album, but I don't have time to check out several dozen artists. I'm just sayin'.

Buckethead- Decoding the Tomb of Bansheebot, Albino Slug, Colma, Crime Slunk Scene, Population Override
Joe Satriani- Surfing With the Alien (Or, if we can drop comp albums, The Electric Joe Satriani. His absolute best work.)
Eric Clapton- Unplugged
Wes Montgomery- The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery

A few of my absolute favorites.

EDIT: As far as the greatest living guitarist, Buckethead absolutely gets my vote.

I can't match you on Brazil, but I can do South America:

Colombiafrica - The Mystic Orchestra - Voodoo Love Inna Champeta-Land

It's got Diblo, and Dally Kimoko, Sékou Diabaté, Nyboma and Rigo Star. I saw Rigo in LA once. Like most African shows, it started at 1am and went until dawn.
