Part of the reason for going with a wooden chassis is to match with my wooden Grado. :k701smile:

@UntilThen - great stuff!!! Truly glad WhispEr turned out as great as I was hoping for :)

Current favourite tubes so far in WhispEr are:-

EL84, Brimar 6SL7, 12AT7 (GEC A2900, Brimar CV455), 6N23P.

This is with Grados. With IEMs, probably lower gain tubes might perform better.
Surprising to learn that 6SL7 with gain of 70 is not too high (for Grados).
I will buy a couple inexpensive ones on eBay.

Wow Voskhod 6N23P in WhispEr touched my soul. I have always love this tube and now hearing it by itself is an experience to die for. How can a tube so small, yet sound so clear in the high frequencies and have midbass that beat in pronounced rhythms, in perfect timing with your heart beat? This is the Voskhod, the pocket dynamite.
Hmmm. Gotta get one of these pocket dynamite tubes! Would the year be important with these?

Mandatory reason for excellent sound quality. But now you'll need woden interconnects and, why not, a wooden fuse? That one sounds best.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I missed my chance of a wooden chassis with Odyssey. Was in discussion with Tomas on that but in the end decided on the metallic silver chassis because it would blend with EL11 and EL12 spez tubes grey color.

So finally an amp in a wooden chassis for me. Pity I can't get it in Cocobolo. The one we're getting is mahogany or rosewood.

It's all your doing, so congrats.

Glenn was fond of one stage amp and build the EL3N amp in both one and two stage. Eric's one stage amp is very well crafted. The temptation to get one is very strong but I'm drowning with amps here. :relaxed:

Yup. My 6EL3N amp has 1-stage / 2-stage switch

Wednesday Morning 3am is the debut studio album by Simon and Garfunkel.

3am is my favourite time for testing tube amp for the sound of silence. At 3am, WhispEr is completely silent. So is Ultima and this is with sensitive Grados.

Here it is, Sound of Silence by Disturbed as heard on my Grado Hemp with WhispEr. :relaxed:

This guy spend some time evaluating 6922 or equivalent tubes. 1974 and 1975 Voskhod are featured in the top ten. Whether that is important to you is another matter. Mine is 1975 grey shield but I don't think it's the expensive variety. What does it matter, it sounds great ! :)

Now you've a whole list of 6922, 6n23p, e88cc, 7308, e80cc to try. Good luck !

Within the next 2 months, Ultimas in various chassis will be built to customers orders. There will be an all black chassis that is higher and wider. There will be several wooden chassis. There will be an Ultima build with this U-amp chassis. It will be interesting to see them all. :)

I have a very nice pocket knife in cocobolo. Lovely wood!

Awesome! Well... not for my wallet.
Will order 6922 (tube) to 6SN7 (amp socket) adapter from China, and a few tubes to try with it.
Also, 6BL7 and 6SL7 tubes to try out.

Funny, this WhispEr is the opposite of my 1st WhispEr. Endless tube rolling options here, whereas the previous WhispEr is designed for 6S15P and 6H6P which do not really have any equivalents.

You can use E182CC and its American equivalent and also 6CG7 in the same socket as 6N6P. I use Melz 6N12S in adapter instead of 6N6P. Same pinout as 6SN7. There is nowhere to hide from tube rolling...
Interesting... I did not know that!
What about 6GQ7 and 6GJ7 tubes? Are they useful (with / without adapters) in 6N6P or (with adapter) in 6SN7 amp sockets?
I just won a tube lot on eBay for a couple tubes I wanted, but that lot contains several 6GQ7 and 6GJ7 tubes, and many others, that I may end up dumping...

There is a lot I don't know either. For instance, I didn't know that tubes like 6GQ7 and 6GJ7 existed. You will have to check pinout and heater voltage rating to begin with. I usually ask people in the know. The first tube type that swept aside 6N6P for me was 6SN7, with lower heater rating. A pair of loverly old Brimar seduced me.
