I recently got the chance to hear the stax sr009 with woo audio wes with a naim nds and separate power supply and i was very impressed with the sound quality..it was one of them take your headphones off to see if anyone was there moments..and i had a listen to the realizer a8 with the stax headphone amp and headphones that it came with and agree that the sound is a lot better than the beyerdynamic headzone game..for the price of the realizer stax combo it beats quite a lot of mid priced av receivers with 7.1 speakers by a mile and will save you some money if you are thinking about doing a one man home theatre room!

My "End-game" headphone rig was supposedly the LCD-2 and the Burson Audio HA-160D combo, but now, i'm already considering new options, such as HD800 or Beyerdynamic T1...

How about the T3/T4/T5 ? Short of death or bankruptcy, the only real escape from this is to log out and remove Head-Fi from your bookmarks - better yet, tear that router out of the wall socket and tell your boss that you really don't think having an internet connection at your desk is a good idea because you are actually spending 60% of your day on forums.

I'm confident that there are folk out there who have (cumulatively over time) spent more than 100K USD on headphone-based rigs. You could easily spend that amount on sources from the likes of dCS and some of the turntable makers, but I wonder if any Head-Fier (past or present) has anything like that 200-300K in a single 'wall socket to phones' rig. I dont know if Mr Grellman's figures include the cost of removing the room from the equation, but I suspect that they do not - it suddenly makes a 30K+ headpone-based rig look like an absolute bargain.
Things have definitely sped up since I started this thread, and I'm interested in hearing from those who have continued to 'chase the dragon's tail' with each new iteration of TOTL gear - do you see yourselves ever getting off the roundabout, or does the fun lie in knowing that you won't have to for many years to come ?

The comments in that article made Mike Fremer look really bad. That's funny stuff.
As long as there is competition in the market for something new and better there will be no end game rig! That said some people might find something that connects so well with them that they loose interested in what else is out there. Think about the carbon nanotube diaphragms and plasma-arc earphones of the future!
