They're record companies. By definition, they ARE the dark side

But that's pretty despicable regardless.

who cares?

I have yet to find a cd that I can not copy or rip. I use 2 plextor cd-r's. CD's that can not be ripped on my friends comp's are easily ripped with my setup. My point is this: No encription will ever be hack/fool proof. Ever.

If the record companies put the money they spend trying to develop copy protection schemes toward their bottom line, maybe the could reduce the cost of CD's to what they should be. A decent price would do more than anything else to thwart what they refer to "stealing" music.

So far none of the small labels have shown any interest in this right?

So Plextor CDRWs can basically read and rip any CD out there? Cool!

Ya know, I was wondering when this is coming... surely the demand for CD drives that rip copy-protected CDs must be great. This is like the situation here a few years ago regarding pirated CD. A lot of CD-ROM drives could not read them, must be because they were tuned to read only from CDs made from industrial-quality presses

Sony and Pana CD-ROM drives could read them just fine and were referred to as 'pirate-kings'--I think they made a killing

Recent Plextor drives are notorious for their ability to bitch-slap every copy protection scheme lobbed at 'em thus far. I was just in the process of picking up the new black PlexWriter 48/24/48A on newegg.com and a brushed aluminum Oxford bridged firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure from cooldrives.com or whoever has the best deal in the next few days. (We're on the cusp of Firewire 2.0, so those enclosures are about to get way cheaper.) I've been looking into Mac compatibility for the Plextor and while iTunes might not support it yet, Toast does. My last troubleshooting act before purchasing will be to receive a Roxio e-mail about the need for/availability of a designated driver.

Most people here could afford to upgrade because Plextors are dirt-cheap.

(Note: I just checked their site and Newegg appears to have run out of the black Plextor 48A for the time being. Here's the white version for $104.99.)

I have two Plextor scsi cd roms, one's an older burner, model# PX-R820T and the cd rom's model is: PX-40TS. I've had a few issues with the cd rom extracting audio from cdr's, but i was also unable to extract audio from Linkin Park's "hybrid theory" cd. Anyone else ever have issues with that specific album? It's totally clean and not a single finger print on it.

Buy it online!

I have a plextor DVD/CD-RW drive and a 48X CD-RW model. Nothing can compete with a plextor.

Here's a link to a review on the Plextor.

Now the question is, do I want to get it today at the local best buy for $140, or online for $105.

Decisions, decisions.
