Okay, I got the EL-D02 recently just for kicks, received them today and trying them out now... just wondering about the line out in the back and the headphone output... it seems that the headphone out is MUTED when I have a line out connected out to my desktop speakers??? Is this just how this device works? All Headamp/DAC devices of this type I've used have either both work at the same time if needed (line out remaining constant while volume controls the HP output) or mute the line out when headphones are connected... can this device only accept one input at a time? If so, pretty disappointing and not what I expected, although I guess I do have to remember this is only $20.

Also, what's the gain on the headphone amp portion on this thing, because it seems pretty ridiculous... I'm at volume 10 out of 100 with my Sony 7506 and it's already way, way too loud with foobar/itunes volume at max. I can't imagine using this thing for lower impedance IEM's. The worst thing is that this same volume level for the line out on the back would be way, way too quiet... it seems that the two outputs are not really treated as separate components. I guess this is why this is designed mute the HP out when line out is connected, so that it doesn't blow my headphones up by accident? O_o  Or did I just get a faulty unit here?

Not what I had hoped, even for a budget device.... Sound is decent enough but switching between HP out and line out is way too inconvenient and seems potentially dangerous (Imagine you have the volume at 100 and you switch to the HP out and forget to change their volume)... It's also not that quiet noise floor wise though as I detected hiss immediately with my 7506. I guess more quiet than the onboard sound though...

Your are right about everything and this is how it works. But C`mon... look at the price of this thingy and with upgraded caps this thing makes sound way above it`s price, imo.

Yeah true, they ARE $20 after all and I for sure couldn't tell you of a comparable product at this price range at all. If one is looking for the cheapest possible solution for a portable USB headphone amp that has decent gain, I can say this can definitely be a good choice. It's just that the way they designed this 02 model just doesn't make whole lot of sense to me and can be potentially dangerous if one happens to get this to make use of both Line out and HP out features on a regular basis... The first DAC only model made a lot of sense in its simplicity and is a fantastic deal indeed, but this second model I feel has an identity crisis. It's a usb headphone amp, which can also work as a usb dac with a line out, but as two separate units in the same chassis rather than a typical normal integrated headamp/dac unit... yet with both still sharing the same volume pot..? Its all just... odd. To be honest I would probably gladly pay double the price if they can make the two components truly integrated, as the sound is definitely good enough for what it is.

I guess another part of the problem is that these problems and limitations don't seem to be clearly outlined by any of the sellers... maybe they do outline these things in descriptions to the Chinese domestic market, I'm not sure, but definitely the info is lacking for english speakers.

I just got my Ele D02 on the day before yesterday and it's been hooked up to a Linux machine since then. Strangely(read 'sadly'), I'm not noticing any notable improvement over on-board sound as of now. With my CAL!, there is very slight improvement in clarity and soundstage. But the thing that troubles my mind most is, the bass response appears to be relatively inferior than my notebook's on-board sound chip!

I know guys its darn cheap and considering the price maybe I better off not complaining about it any further. But is this little fella supposed to has any burning period or something??

What changes in the bass?

How does it sound? boomby? less controlled?

For starters, the quantity of the bass is apparently decreased. Hence, no reason for it to become boomy. As for being less control, no, not at all. Instead, with the sacrifice of the bass quantity, it now seems to has a wee bit control over bass response than I used to get with my on-board.

That´s how it should sound. Apparently your on-board sound has a pretty high Zout that makes your CAL's bass sound like that and you got used to it. I thought you would say that your CAL´s became congested, boomby and things like that.

So far, everywhere I have tried ELE EL-D02 with stock caps, it has been superior to onboard sound. Also, make sure You kill Linux Pulseaudio and use ALSA.

Hi guys, I'm looking for a cheap portable dac for my laptop. Should I buy el D00 or D01 for my 16ohm kz ate?

Go with the ELE EL D02. Also, look at this generic dac: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCM2706-CS4344-Dual-TDA1308-Parallel-Output-USB-DAC-headphone-Amplifier-PC-/271728531070?hash=item3f4448567e

That one has better specs, and still has ELNA caps, although I don't know what are those blue ones that also comes with it.
