I guess I better open those boxes now to check mine out. They look good. My god are they big. Hopefully your replacements will get there before the amp.

not always are all pins used. I need to go looks at a schematic of the tube.
That would be suspect though and I can see your questioning the testing procedure. I used to sell some NOS tubes and they were tested with all info on each tube box but I know not everyone really tests there tubes as they say they do. I have ordered tubes from a well known tube seller and after testing them for current draw etc, I knew they had not been tested. The excuse was that they are tested at the factory.

Well since others had to suffer, I suppose some of us at the Bay Area meet should pipe in.

Tested with the RS1, GS1000 and HD650. Didn't spend a lot of time with the first (not a big Grado fan), but with the unGrado and Senn it was quite stunning. Best I've ever heard the HD650 sound. The entire spectrum seemed powered with authority, though not surprisingly it was easy to get lost in the wonderful midrange. Felt the excitement of a few years ago when I first heard my first decent home amp (MP3X prototype). Man, I'm jealous of those of you on the first run.

Hi David,

I've had my slam for a couple of weeks now. It took awhile so I had plenty of time to amass tubes ahead of time. Currently I'm running a Tall Bottle (Sylvania I think) in the gain position and two Tungsol 5687s in the output positions. I also had Larry recable the K340. The combo sounds wonderful.

Kevin usually is pretty good with his tubes. However, Upscale Audio is on my "last resort" list for tubes because of the premium price they charge.

I also bought a used Eastsound E5 from Earl (sacd lover). It arrives tomorrow. I'll post a picture when I have the complete setup.

Enjoy your ZD. I'm sure that it will give you a lot of listening pleasure.

Regards,

-ken

All the best to the new ZD owners - I hope you all enjoy your 'little' beast of an amp.

FWIW though - I would check on my 6C33 pins every few months. I'm not sure how hard the ZD runs them, but I've seen some pictures of the punishment those (seriously underengineered IMO) pins take and its... not pretty.

Since i dont' have my final tube yet (6sL7), i'll just describe it to you (there are pics already).
This is a very impressive looking amplifier, with dozens of little screws, heavy and firm box, large tubes and high feet, it tends ot give the impression of a formidable and expensive piece of machinery.

It has a very unique look to it. The top isn't as shiny as the pictures, although i havn't tried to clean it yet. The screws, di-color scheme and Eddie Current logo give it a look of a modern piece of machinery, but not something that is trying to look cool. This certainly isn't a Moth Audio Hagia Sophia, but this isn't the latest apple product either. Instead, it gives the impression of something that was built recently and is here to stay, it isn't trying to make a modern statement, but reassure me of it's competence.

I was somewhat surprized to see the placement of the inputs and outputs.. this may mean i'll have to switch to 1M interconnects.

I'm not entirely clear about what Craig is trying to do with placing the two largest tubes in the front, the look is somewhat inartistic (given Mikhail's amps), but nevertheless decent. With the two large feet at the bottom, it certainly makes one eyebrow go up.
Notes:
there is a little red light sticking out of the casing.
There are 3 inputs, two preamp outs. placed on the side near the input selector.
It requires 5 tubes, and only comes with the rectifier tubes, not the output.
It's very heavy, and didn't come with a box, so i had to take it home on a luggage cart

Measures 12.5'' wide, 9'' tall, 15'' deep.

Lucky...

You snagged the Si2A3 on Audiogon for $1200 didn't you? Are you going to send it to Craig so it will be optimized to drive headphones? Since there might be a low level hum especially noticeable with Grados and other low impedance cans.

I am the one. Don't forget the 2 AVVT 2A3 mesh plates which are included.

I use 650's at the moment, so no need to mod yet. I also have the ZD for that, anyway. jp11801's Moth 2A3 doesn't have a problem driving Grado's that I recall so I will decide down the road.

Yes those AVVTs are highly regarded new production tubes and fetch a pretty penny. Another fine score that are out of production too. I believe jp11801's 2A3 was previously owned by KenW and Craig made many changes to that amp so that it would drive Senns better and Grados w/out any hum.

philodox what amp are you waiting on?
