what are differences in sound between 300B and PX4. also are the KR PX4s much better than the Sophia's

thanks

The 300B to me sounded warmer and tubier than the PX4s that I had the chance to hear.  Although the 300B tubes did vary quite a bit from the lower end tubes and some better tubes that Craig had on hand (sorry, I forgot what brand he had on hand).  The PX4s were more neutral, but still very musical in their presentation.  The KR PX4s did sound better than the Sophia PX4s, a bit more extended in the highs and a little warmer sound, but I did not think that the sound justified the difference in price.  So I am sticking with the Sophia PX4s in my Equilibrato.

thanks for the comments. my next audio purchase will most likely be a pair of PX4 tubes for my BA. it's great that the BA can handle the different tubes.

What tubes are you using now?

at the moment, just the stock tubes supplied with the unit. the amp sounds excellent so i haven't been that curious about trying other tubes but eventually i would like a set of PX4s to go along with the 300Bs.

OK guys .. my BA didn't get to me before we left for a family holiday over to the other side of Australia .. a place called Margaret River to be precise. One of Australia's great wine producing regions of Australia. A place i have never been to before. The amp arrived whilst i was away and my good neighbours collected it for me. Another piece of kit arrived the day before we left for this holiday my Playback Design MPS-5 SACD player which also accepts digital inputs. Well i am now back from a gem of a holiday and recommend Margaret River to anyone if you ever visit Australia.

So i setup my rig this morning after getting back late last night from a 4.5hr flight. As some of you may be aware i sold my previous BA amp so that i could get this latest iteration from Craig. This time i also ordered a set of KR 842 and KR PX4 valves. Using a coax out to my Playback Design MPS-5 SACD player and then using the analogue outs of my the same player into my amp. I have alot of burning in to do before i can make any constructive review. The SACD player requires something like 300hrs before it reaches its prime ...

But from i have heard even after about 5hrs of listening today with the 842's inserted this is an amazing sound .... and it will only get better with more hours ... so far i started with the HD600's using a balanced SAA cable and i can't get these off my head to even want to try any other headphone yet ...

Hope to report back in a few weeks time for a more comprehensive review once this equipment has had a few decent hours of use.

I am jealous. I was shooting for the playback design but ended up getting my skylla. Even though I am very happy with it, I am still curious to know how the playback design would have paired with the BA.

Yes pretty scathing about lack of user instructions. I must admit with my new BA i nearly FORCED in the 842 tubes before considering it shouldn't be this hard and nothing should be forced in. So i took a look at the bottom of the valve and saw that two of the connectors were fatter and worked out the orientation by looking at the Yamamoto socket. But i could imagine others trying to force the tube into the socket believing the valve identification labelling should be facing forward ... and not inward when properly oriented. I guess with this sort of profile Criag will have to take note of this criticism. Although having said that this is the first run (I believe) where this socket was provided as standard?

It is the first run with the socket. I found the socket when my last run Ba was being made and asked if he could put it in. Unfortunately he couldnt because apparently the top plate needed different mounting for that socket. I wanted that socket so I could try rolling some nos px4 which use the different base from the 300b.
