That's what he told me. Did replacements make a big difference?

If your stock tube is the Tung Sol 6SL7GT then you can consider it worthless.
Check out these, a selection of the best depending on taste and phones used:
Mullard ECC35
Brimar CV 1985
Philips JAN 6SL7WGT (black base green print)
RCA 5691 red base
Sophia Electric Premium 6SL7 Grade A
Tung-Sol 1951 JAN CTL 6SU7GTY black glass
Tung-Sol 6SU7GTY clear glass
All these are described in this thread.

If you have a different stock tube things can be different of course.

Thanks. I'm into getting this amp. What's your favorite tube setup and total cost? Did you replace all 5 tubes?

The tubes I mentioned are all driver tubes.
You can't roll the power tubes as there's only one kind as far as I know.
The rectifiers are no use as well, there's only one other type (EY500A) and it didn't make any difference for me.
Cost of the driver tubes? Well, depends on the type you get and the market. These tubes are getting scarce and prices from dealers and on eBay seem to skyrocket compared to what I bought them for 5 years ago or so. you really can't stick a price on them.

Just give me a very rough estimate. I need to see if I can ballpark it

Estimate of what? Which tube? You only need 1 tube to replace the driver.
Some of those tubes can be found for 50 while the same tube can be found for a few 100 bucks.
Read up about the tubes, find the one you 'd like to try and google it, you'll get all kinds of prices for the same tube.

I thought you replaced all the tubes.

To change the sound/sonic coloration, you only need to change the driver tube. The driver is the center tube in front of the amplifier.

The driver tube uses a 6SL7 tube. There are several versions of this tube, just to name a few.

6SL7 GT is the standard version
5691 is the industrial/premium version made by RCA
6SU7GTY/6188 is the premium version made by Tung Sol
ECC35 is the European version of 6SL7
Sophia Electric Premium 6SL7 Grade A is a current production by Sophia Electric.

I'm content with either 5691 or 6SU7GTY/6188 for my HD650. Got my tubes from Ebay. The price ranges from $28-$48 each. I got the tubes about 2 months ago.
