denons are unnatural sounding(colored) and lost in clarity against etymotics, and their bass is muddy at best....

^ Hmm, maybe you got a faulty pair? Or you're comparing to much higher end IEMs? Or you're an anti-basshead? I wouldn't say the 551 is muddy... No doubt they're less analytical and neutral than the Etys, tho.

The 551s don't benefit from the Fiio. Also, those things are kind of annoying. No volume control, no off switch. Glarb. But they do good things for my HD201s and K26Ps.

Just wondering. Would a Altec Lansing im616 be close to the im716 with an amp?

Also, is the im616 exactly the same as an Etymotic ER6i?

Yeah. Cause I'd be saving a crapload of money by getting the im616 instead of the im716. Comparatively, the im716 is $75 while the im616 is $45 (both shipped), a huge difference. Also, does the im616 need to be amped?

i was comparing c700 to er4p, and for the bass section:
c700 is like havin a bunch of guys farting at you simultaneously
er4p is like......very tight, tangible, well defined bass, give the impression they have less bass cuz those from c700 are mushed up

but my biggest problem is, c700 sounds very colored out of my dr80

Alright! Thanks a lot! After reading some more, it seems like the amped im716 are the answer for me. The question is, what would be a good portable (very important) amp to drive the AL's for under $30?
